The conference focuses on physical, cognitive, and perceptual augmentation of humans through digital technologies. The plural – humans – emphasizes the move towards technologies that enhance human capabilities beyond the individual and will have the potential for impact on societal scale.

The idea of augmenting the human intellect has a long tradition, the term was coined by Douglas Engelbart in 1962 [1]. Experience the NYC Times Square Ball Drop in the ‘metaverse’

[Although the term metaverse is being used broadly to refer to social virtual worlds (see Mashable’s story on the evolution and current definitions of metaverse), you can experience New Year’s Eve in New York City’s Times Square online with other people in (at least) two ways this year. The Bloomberg story below describes MetaFest 2022, drawing in part from a press release available via Business Wire; for more information see the event’s website. A different experience from the same company is available for the second year using the VNYE website and app; details are in another press release via Business Wire.

Happy New Year to you – let’s hope that 2022 brings us all better days. –Matthew]

Is this Christmas card real or virtual? We can’t tell

[Of course it’s already virtual because it’s a video (!), but this short DesignTAXI story describes an impressive (and eerie) 1:21 minute demonstration that illustrates how well a 3D scan of a physical object can mimic the object itself. The video is available in the original story or via Vimeo. See the M-XR website, particularly the Projects page, for more information (if you want to get your own object scanned, see the Technology page). –Matthew]

Is This Christmas Card Real Or Virtual? We Can’t Tell

By Mikelle Leow
December 22, 2021

An incredible digital project will change everything you know about holiday e-cards, merging the boundaries between what’s real and fabricated.

From virtual plots of land worth millions to artwork you splurge on that you can see but can’t touch, this has been the year where belongings aren’t just bound to the physical world—so it’s fitting that the holidays arrive on the same surreal high, one that’s infused with mixed reality.… read more. “Is this Christmas card real or virtual? Call for Participation

To the 4th Dimension and Beyond
LA Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH Event
Tuesday, 11 January 2022, 7-9 pm PST
Via Zoom
https://lasiggraph.org/event/fourth-dimension-and-beyond

Computer graphics provides opportunities to interact with, calculate, and visualize multi-dimensional space. This is one of our community’s important frontiers and has been compared to the revolution of linear perspective during the Renaissance.

DESCRIPTION:

Many experience day-to-day reality in four dimensions: the three physical dimensions + time. Alternatively, physicists, artists, science fiction writers and mathematicians dwell conceptually beyond the fourth dimension. Computer graphics provides opportunities to interact with, calculate and visualize multidimensional space. This is one of our community’s important frontiers and has been compared to the revolution of linear perspective during the Renaissance. Join us to explore the visualization of multidimensional space, its evolution in entertainment and how geometric algebra offers unique computational advantages.

Maija Beeton will introduce the topic of multi-dimensional visualization, the history of drawing systems used to present 3D worlds on 2D planes, and the story of “Flatland: a Romance of Many Dimensions.”… read more. “Call: To the 4th Dimension and Beyond – LA ACM SIGGRAPH Event”

Positron’s motion chairs enhance presence in ‘VR Cinema’

[Somewhere between viewing a film in a traditional movie theater and exploring an interactive virtual environment experienced via a head-mounted display is VR Cinema. This Spectrum News story is about one company providing the latter experience in a growing number of venues. See the Positron website for more details. –Matthew]

LA-based Positron continues to roll out virtual reality motion chairs

By Joseph Pimentel
December 7, 2021

LOS ANGELES — Soon, you may only need to visit your local movie theater to see what it feels like to be on top of Machu Picchu.

Just hop on Positron’s virtual reality motion pod and don a VR headset, and it’ll feel like you’ve been transported above the Amazon rainforest.

This kind of experience is not like watching a movie on a 50 by 50-foot wide screen, said Jeffrey Travis, the CEO of Positron, a Los Angeles-based virtual reality technology and entertainment company.… read more. “Positron’s motion chairs enhance presence in ‘VR Cinema’”
