Submission deadline: March 31, 2023

Dear all,

From the early days of computing, scientists and dreamers alike were captivated by the idea of creating machines that could think and reason like humans. As the decades passed, a sense of tension grew as pioneers in the field made strides in developing increasingly sophisticated AI systems, while skeptics warned of the dangers of creating machines that might outstrip human intelligence. The tension reached a fever pitch in the 1990s, with the rise of expert systems and neural networks, and then exploded onto the world stage with the arrival of deep learning and other breakthroughs in the 21st century. Today, the history of AI is an epic tale of innovation and ambition, filled with moments of triumph and moments of reckoning, as we seek to create intelligent machines that will shape the course of human history.… read more. “Call: Lab42 Essay Challenge: On creating AI in Virtual Worlds”

Researchers develop wireless, soft e-skin for interactive touch communication in the virtual world

[The development of a soft “electronic skin” that can “both detect and deliver the sense of touch” has, as this news release from City University of Hong Kong notes, “great potential for enhancing the immersion of distance touch communication.” The fact that such communication could be both one-to-one or one-to-many adds intriguing possibilities. See the original version of the story for three more pictures and see the new publication in Science Advances for more details. –Matthew]

Call: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Explainable AI – Special Track at xAI 2023

Call for Papers

Special Track: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on XAI
xAI 2023: First World Conference on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence
July 26-28, 2023
Lisbon, Portugal
https://xaiworldconference.com/special-track-interdisciplinary-perspectives-on-xai/

Submission deadline: April 20, 2023

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent, concerns about biased decision-making, mistrust, safety, and gaps in responsibility as well as accountability become increasingly pressing. While eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is seen as a crucial and central means of mitigating these risks, a more comprehensive understanding of XAI is still required that considers not only technical aspects but also societal, psychological, legal, and ethical requirements of AI explanations.

The special track Interdisciplinary Perspectives on XAI at the First World Conference on Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI 2023) aims to provide a forum for discussing and exploring these issues, bringing together experts from various disciplines to advance the field of XAI. The topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Psychological notions and concepts for XAI
  • Philosophical consideration of synthetic explanations
  • XAI as prerequisite for responsible, AI-supported decision-making
  • XAI, humans-in-the-loop, and effective human oversight
  • The impact of XAI on trust(worthiness) and acceptance
  • Explainability & responsibility in policy guidelines
  • The epistemic & moral goods expected from explaining AI
  • Moral principles & dilemma for XAI-based systems
  • Legal considerations for explainable AI
  • Explainable AI for decision support in critical systems
  • The societal implications of XAI

The conference committee welcomes three different types of article submissions: full articles (12 to 24 pages, including references), short articles (6 to 12 pages, including references), and extended abstracts (3 to 6 pages, including references).… read more. “Call: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Explainable AI – Special Track at xAI 2023”

Popular Instagram photographer confesses that his work is AI-generated

[The case of Instagram photographer Jos Avery illustrates both another new way artificial intelligence can be used to evoke misperceptions about the role of technology in an experience and the ethical issues raised by the deception. This story is from My Modern Net, where the original version includes many examples of Avery’s portraits; see the linked Ars Technica and PetaPixel stories for more details. Coverage in Bored Panda adds this complication:

“[Y]ou can see the copyright of the photographer on all the photos – but it is likely that he will have to remove it soon – after all, the US Copyright Office recently said you can’t copyright Midjourney AI-generated images. Yes, it was related to another art project, but the legal precedent has already been set.”

Hands-free tech adds realistic sense of touch in extended reality

Tactile bracelet and ‘pseudo-haptic’ visuals make virtual touch more believable

By Jade Boyd
February 22, 2023

With an eye toward a not-so-distant future where some people spend most or all of their working hours in extended reality, researchers from Rice University, Baylor College of Medicine and Meta Reality Labs have found a hands-free way to deliver believable tactile experiences in virtual environments.

Users in virtual reality (VR) have typically needed hand-held or hand-worn devices like haptic controllers or gloves to experience tactile sensations of touch.… read more. “Hands-free tech adds realistic sense of touch in extended reality”
