Michelin-star tasting menu meets VR art in Miami, courtesy of Meta and Superblue

[The post title is from ARTNews but the story below is from the Miami Herald, and it describes the latest version of an intriguing “presence and food” experience reported in a September 2019 ISPR Presence News post. The ARTNews story includes this:

“’How do you visualize taste? What is the shape of spice? What is the color of flavor?’ [Creator Mattia] Casalegno said in an interview, describing his project. ‘I conceived Aerobanquets RMX as a total feast for the senses, a multi-sensory journey, a tool to reprogram all our perceptive expectations.’ … Casalegno first conceived of Aerobanquets in 2018 with the help of a fellowship grant from the Chronus Art Center. The project initially appeared in Shanghai in collaboration with Flavio G. Carestia, a chef at the Toscanini restaurant in Amsterdam. The following year, it was presented at the James Beard house in New York City. … read more. “Michelin-star tasting menu meets VR art in Miami, courtesy of Meta and Superblue”

Morehouse College class will teach Black history in the metaverse

[This NBC News story describes how and why Morehouse College Professor Ovell Hamilton has created a unique course on Black history that will be taught next spring entirely via virtual reality, taking students to key places and events using 3D simulations and avatars designed to evoke spatial and social presence and enhance learning. See the original version of the story for five more images and a short video.  –Matthew]

Call: Workshop on Language-Based AI Agent Interaction with Children at IWSDS 2023

Call for Papers

Workshop on Language-Based AI Agent Interaction with Children
At IWSDS 2023, the 13th International Workshop on Spoken Dialogue Systems Technology
In Los Angeles, USA & Virtual (Hybrid Format)
February 21, 2023
Workshop: https://aichildinteraction.github.io/
IWSDS 2023: https://sites.google.com/view/iwsds2023/home

Paper Submission Deadline: December 21st, 2022

In this workshop, we aim to bring together researchers looking into multimodal interactions between children and artificial agents to discuss research problems that center around interactivity and go beyond just processing child speech. We are interested in discussing approaches to collecting and annotating datasets involving child speech, intent classification in child speech, designing dialogue flow with artificial agents that primarily interact with children, as well as repair strategies, active listening behavior, and other aspects of dialogue modeling. Moreover, multiparty conversations involving several children, children, and their adult caregivers or several artificial agents are of particular interest to this workshop.… read more. “Call: Workshop on Language-Based AI Agent Interaction with Children at IWSDS 2023”

AI being used to create realistic portraits of celebrities from past and into future

[The brief story below from My Modern Net describes a project by Istanbul lawyer and photographer Alper Yesiltas in which he uses AI and other software to create realistic images of what celebrities who died years ago would look like today, “brought back to life as if nothing happened.” See the original story for the ten images. His most recent project, which Yesiltas presents in a Bored Panda post, is called “Thisness” (“[t]he quality in a thing of being here and now or such as it is”) and features 17 images that address the question “What would some iconic people look like if they lived in our time instead of living in theirs?” See also Tommy Player’s “Time Travel To The Future (2027): Photoshopped Actors” in another Bored Panda post. Moving from images to sounds, coverage of Yesiltas’ work in Consequence adds this:

“This isn’t the first time AI has been used in relation to [Curt] Cobain and [Jimi] Hendrix.… read more. “AI being used to create realistic portraits of celebrities from past and into future”

Ultimate presence: How to test if we’re living in a computer simulation

[In this story from The Conversation a physicist explains some of the current arguments and evidence for the idea that all of our experience is the result of the ultimate form of presence – that the universe itself “is a computer simulation, with someone (perhaps an advanced alien species) fine-tuning the conditions.” The author argues that we should take the possibility seriously and describes new efforts to prove or disprove it; whether that happens or not, our collective fascination with the idea is entirely consistent with the fact that we live in an era when our technologies increasingly provide convincing illusions. –Matthew]

How to test if we’re living in a computer simulation

Call: “Visual War Journalism in a Digital Age” special issue of Digital Journalism

Call for Papers

“Visual War Journalism in a Digital Age”
Special issue of Digital Journalism
Special issue Editor: Stuart Allan, Cardiff University, UK
https://think.taylorandfrancis.com/special_issues/digital-journalism-visual-war/

Abstract deadline: December 1, 2022
Manuscript deadline: April 17, 2023

The ongoing crisis engendered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has recast anew longstanding concerns about the relative strengths and limitations of war and conflict reporting. Journalists are risking their lives to bear witness in often harrowing circumstances – some finding themselves deliberately targeted by the Russian military – on behalf of their distant readers, listeners or viewers. Intent on crafting compelling narratives, many are actively refashioning conventional approaches to digital reportage in order to better engage and focus public attention on the plight of those whose lives are caught-up in this catastrophe.

Just as familiar conceptions of visual journalism are undergoing reappraisal, more traditional understandings of war correspondence appear increasingly open to experimentation and innovation, particularly across social media sites and apps.… read more. “Call: “Visual War Journalism in a Digital Age” special issue of Digital Journalism”

Cornell students visit virtual world to learn protein research technique

Students visit virtual world to learn research technique

By Kathy Hovis, a writer for the College of Arts and Sciences
November 22, 2022

Safely and effectively preparing a sample for cryo-electron microscopy involves a series of precise steps, resulting in specimens frozen at around minus 180 degrees Celsius. If done out of order or imprecisely, the scientist can obtain inaccurate results, ruin expensive equipment or even get hurt.

The technique isn’t often available to young researchers, but students in the Protein Structure and Function class recently had the chance to experience the process using virtual reality (VR) headsets, as part of a collaboration with Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI).… read more. “Cornell students visit virtual world to learn protein research technique”
