The XR in Pediatrics (XRPeds) Lab in the Department of Pediatrics at Yale focuses on the use of extended reality (virtual, augmented, and mixed reality) in research, clinical practice, and health education with the goal of improving lives and reducing health disparities among youth, young adults, and their families. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Associate with an interest in substance use prevention in adolescents, technology-based interventions (including virtual reality-based interventions), serious games, health behavior or public health, school-based research, and appropriate experience to join our multidisciplinary team of researchers, pediatricians, and educators.

The Postdoctoral Associate will work primarily with Drs. Hieftje and Camenga on the development, evaluation, and implementation of a virtual reality-based videogame intervention for adolescents focused on nicotine and marijuana use prevention in three CT schools. The Postdoctoral Associate will gain skills in intervention development, recruitment of study participants; focus group/playtesting facilitation; pilot program evaluation; data collection, management, and analysis; writing up results; and presenting findings to both community and academic audiences. Funded by the CT Department of Public Health, the position also involves overseeing community-building events and activities related to the project.

This position is a one-year, full-time appointment with renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding and is eligible to start immediately.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  1. PhD in Public Health, Education, Social Behavioral Sciences, Psychology or related Field
  2. Excellent methodological and statistical skills, including working with qualitative and quantitative data, especially mixed methods
  3. Demonstrated ability (or potential to learn) to collaborate with school communities (educators, students, families) and maintain school relations
  4. Independence to lead a project as well as willingness to work in a team and learn new methods from collaborators
  5. Excellent scientific presentation and writing skills
  6. Interest and/or experience conducting school-based, prevention or tobacco-related research with adolescents is a plus
