Computer graphics provides opportunities to interact with, calculate, and visualize multi-dimensional space. This is one of our community’s important frontiers and has been compared to the revolution of linear perspective during the Renaissance.

DESCRIPTION:

Many experience day-to-day reality in four dimensions: the three physical dimensions + time. Alternatively, physicists, artists, science fiction writers and mathematicians dwell conceptually beyond the fourth dimension. Computer graphics provides opportunities to interact with, calculate and visualize multidimensional space. This is one of our community’s important frontiers and has been compared to the revolution of linear perspective during the Renaissance. Join us to explore the visualization of multidimensional space, its evolution in entertainment and how geometric algebra offers unique computational advantages.

Maija Beeton will introduce the topic of multi-dimensional visualization, the history of drawing systems used to present 3D worlds on 2D planes, and the story of “Flatland: a Romance of Many Dimensions.” After which Marc Ten Bosch discusses his video of “4D Toys” and his 4D game “Miegakure.” Next is Steven De Keninck, who explains how many more ways we have to dance in the fourth dimension and how all of them are spin-turns! Finally Michael Fleming, Independent presents his proposal for a “4D contoller” to be used when navigating multidimensional spaces.

PRESENTERS:

Maija Beeton, Artist/Producer
Steven De Keninck, Mathematical Experimentalist, Origami Digital LLC
Michael Fleming, Independent Researcher
Marc Ten Bosch, Independent Game Developer
