Abstracts submission deadline: September 15, 2022

This special themed section of TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies seeks to explore the study of digital platforms as a question of culture and intimacy. As proposed by Rambukkana and de Verteuil (2021), digital platforms seem to be everywhere and nowhere all at once— computational technologies such as video game consoles and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) interfaces; software platforms such as Meta and ArcGIS; algorithmic decision making and deep learning interfaces—digital platforms increasingly structure ways of knowing and being in relation to each other and the world. The ubiquity of digital platforms and their extensive reach makes them difficult to pin down as objects of culture study. Even the scope of the term “platform” is contested, shifting, in flux (Gillespie, 2010).… read more. “Call: Platform Intimacies – Special themed section of TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies”

By Lauren Frayer
August 13, 2022

NEW DELHI — First comes the melancholy twang of a South Asian sitar, plucking a ballad about nostalgia for childhood. Then the name of a faraway yet familiar place appears on a black screen, in Hindi. Suddenly the screen bursts into 3-D light, revealing a dusty street corner — one that Ishar Das Arora hasn’t seen in 75 years.… read more. “75 years after India’s violent Partition, survivors can cross the border – virtually”

‘Recreated’ Harry Caray startles viewers of MLB ‘Field of Dreams’ game

[The mixed reactions to a digital recreation of beloved baseball announcer Harry Caray, at a game celebrating a much-loved film about “a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends” (Wikipedia), illustrate the challenges of creating effective presence illusions of people who have died. The report below is from The Washington Post, where the original includes more pictures, video clips and Tweets; find more reactions in coverage from TV Insider, CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated. Note that the reactions seem to have been more positive in the stadium than on social media where the flaws in the digital Caray were likely more apparent. –Matthew]

Hello all,

I hope you are all well. My new monograph, The Phenomenology of Virtual Technology. Perception and Imagination in a Digital Age, has been released today by Bloomsbury Academic (https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/phenomenology-of-virtual-technology-9781350245501/). It is also available through all other major outlets (Amazon etc.).

It would be of interest to anyone concerned with perception and imagination, especially the phenomenology thereof, as well as how these relate inherently to new and current virtual technologies such as social media, online gaming, and virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR, AR and MR respectively) technologies.

Enjoy!

Syncing mediated and not: Interrail creates unique SoundTracks for every single train traveler

[Many of us have had the strange experience in which the recorded music we’re listening to (e.g., in headphones or earbuds while walking) coincidentally seems to match up with the environment we’re moving through. This story from Creative Boom describes a new purposeful effort to create these matches between mediated and nonmediated elements of our experience, a type of presence illusion. See the original story for several different pictures and a 1:06 minute promotional video (also available via YouTube) and see the “Projects” page of the Circus Family website for other interesting presence-related projects such as “Vlisco – We are Here,” “KLM – Hologram Bar” and “TRIPH Interactive Installation.” For related resources see the June 2021 InsideHook story “Porsche’s Newest Technology Literally Composes Music While You Drive. The Marque’s New Soundtrack My Life App Turns Your Life Into a Movie,” Headphonesty’s “Listen to Music Together: Top Music Sync Apps to Party With Friends Online,” and the “Variations” section of Wikipedia’s entry for “Diegetic music.”… read more. “Syncing mediated and not: Interrail creates unique SoundTracks for every single train traveler”

Job: PhD/Postdoc/Research Fellow in Game AI at Aalto University (Finland)

Call for Applications

PhD/Postdoc/Research Fellow in Game AI
Project: “User Modelling in Games and Beyond via Computational Intrinsic Motivation”
Finnish Center for AI (FCAI) at Aalto University
Next to Helsinki, Finland

Deadline: August 21, 2022 (Postdoc / Research Fellow) or August 28, 2022 (PhD Student)

Description:

Much of our behaviour and experience is not only driven by separate consequences or instrumental outcomes, but also by intrinsic motivations [1]. This becomes particularly apparent when people play videogames – quintessential, intrinsically motivated activities. The goal of this project is to leverage computational models of intrinsic motivation and deep reinforcement learning to advance the state-of-the-art in user modelling. While the focus is firmly on videogames, the project strives to generalise the insights to other domains in human-computer interaction research. The supervisors have extensive experience in videogame, human-computer interaction and intrinsic motivation research, and established the basis for this work through pioneering qualitative and quantitative proof-of-concepts [2,3] as well as theoretical studies [4].… read more. “Job: PhD/Postdoc/Research Fellow in Game AI at Aalto University (Finland)”
