Reach in and touch objects in videos with “Interactive Dynamic Video”

Technique from Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab could improve augmented reality and reduce the need for CGI green-screens.

August 2, 2016

We learn a lot about objects by manipulating them: poking, pushing, prodding, and then seeing how they react.

We obviously can’t do that with videos — just try touching that cat video on your phone and see what happens. But is it crazy to think that we could take that video and simulate how the cat moves, without ever interacting with the real one?

Researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) have recently done just that, developing an imaging technique called Interactive Dynamic Video (IDV) that lets you reach in and “touch” objects in videos.… read more. “Reach in and touch objects in videos with “Interactive Dynamic Video””

You’ll be blown away by the world’s first virtual reality ballet experience

By Luke Dormehl — September 7, 2016

When you picture the various use-cases that best fit virtual reality, ballet may not be the first you think of. Or the 10th, for that matter. But sometimes it’s a whole lot of fun being proved wrong, which is exactly what the Dutch National Opera & Ballet has done with Night Fall, aka the world’s first VR ballet.

The idea behind it is simple: slap on a Google Cardboard or Gear VR headset and then enjoy an astonishing 360-degree video that places you in the midst of a dance performance you’re not soon going to forget.… read more. “The world’s first virtual reality ballet experience”

Porn Chatbot Tricks Argentinians Into Thinking They’re Chatting With President

Written by Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai
September 6, 2016

Is that person you’re interacting with online a real flesh-and-bones human, or are they actually just made of 1s and 0s?

Sometimes, it’s easy to tell that Twitter egg that speaks like a robot is, indeed, a robot. Other times, it’s trickier. Sometimes, you’re really reading tweets from the official account of your country’s president. Other times you’re reading tweets written from a recycled pornbot pretending to be your president.

Since last year, hundreds of Argentinians have interacted with a Twitter account purporting to belong to controversial then-President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.… read more. “Porn chatbot tricks Argentinians into thinking they’re chatting with President”

Presence humor: Sleeping student uses life-size photo of himself in class so it looks like he’s paying attention

[The school year is starting for many of us, so here’s a story about how a student supposedly created a (presence) illusion so he can appear attentive in class while he sleeps. The story from the Daily Mail includes the 11 second video and three images; the post and hundreds of comments about it are available on Reddit; and the creator, Zach King, has posted many other illusions on YouTube. For more light but thought-provoking presence items join the ISPR Presence Community Facebook group. –Matthew]

Call: Music in Video Games Panel – Royal Music Association Music and Philosophy Study Group Conference

Royal Music Association Music and Philosophy Study Group Conference
Kings College, London
13th – 14th July 2017

Music in Video Games Panel
Conveners: William Gibbons and Derek Matravers

There has been great deal of interest in the past few years within musicology and music theory in the contribution of music to the experience of playing video games. The topic has been relatively neglected in philosophy, although it is related to several extant discussions concerning other media. We would like to invite papers from any discipline which reflect on this topic, thus contributing to developing a philosophical take on the role of music in video games.

Topics of interest might include (but are not limited to):

  • The contribution of music to the experience of playing video games.
  • The relation between the music and other aspects of the video game, in particular the game’s narrative content
  • The contribution of music to the nature of video games and their status as art
  • The ontological status of video game music between real and virtual worlds
  • The role of games in (re)defining the musical act
  • Video games and the idea of musical play

Proposals of no longer than 300 words should be submitted to Derek Matravers (derek.matravers@open.ac.ukread more. “Call: Music in Video Games Panel – Royal Music Association Music and Philosophy Study Group Conference”
