Scream therapy: The benefits of immersive horror

[This story from Psychology Today describes potential psychological benefits of immersive horror experiences that combine “live actors, intricate sets, physical effects like heat and cold, and psychological ‘tricks’ to help induce fear.” As the author is careful to note, these intense experiences aren’t recommended for or appealing to everyone (!). Call: “Beyond Reality? Virtuality and Experience” Aesthetics & Critique VII conference

Call for Abstracts

Beyond Reality? Virtuality and Experience
Aesthetics & Critique VII
Kunsthalle Friart & University of Fribourg
Fribourg, Switzerland
December 14-16, 2023
https://projects.unifr.ch/aesthetics-critique/workshop/

Submission deadline: September 30, 2023

Confirmed keynote speakers:
Aurora Hoel (NTNU)
Oliver Krüger (U. Fribourg)
Lars Bang Larsen (Art Hub Copenhagen)
Andrea Pinotti (U. Milan)
Zuzanna Aleksandra Rucińska (U. Antwerp)

The philosophical debate concerning virtuality has so far privileged metaphysical issues, asking whether or not virtual spaces and objects should be considered as real or illusory. With this conference, we suggest bracketing such metaphysical questions for a while and focus instead on the relationship between virtuality and experience. In this framework, we would like to favour a phenomenological approach that understands virtuality as a mode of experience that is often mediated by technology.

The range of questions that this conference aims to address includes, but is not limited to, the following: What does it mean to experience ‘virtuality’?… read more. “Call: “Beyond Reality? Virtuality and Experience” Aesthetics & Critique VII conference”

BMW’s teleoperated car parking system won’t be putting valets out of work

[BMW new system for parking cars represents a creative application of teleoperation: a valet drives and parks cars remotely via a “setup that closely resembles the high-end racing rigs some gamers use.” This story from SlashGear provides details; see the original for two more pictures. For a first-person report on what it’s like to use the system see coverage in Ars Technica.  –Matthew]

BMW’s Remote Parking Cars Won’t Be Putting Valets Out Of Work

By Dave Mcquilling
July 26, 2023

Like many manufacturers, BMW is putting a lot of effort into its self-driving systems. One of the more promising areas self driving tech could make an impact is in parking garages. BMW has been developing automatic parking systems for years now, and it’s one of the areas Level 4 self driving tech is being put to good use.… read more. “BMW’s teleoperated car parking system won’t be putting valets out of work”

Call: ACM IUI 2024: ACM Intelligent User Interfaces 2024 Conference

Call for Papers

ACM IUI 2024: ACM Intelligent User Interfaces 2024 Conference
Greenville, South Carolina, USA
March 18-21, 2024
https://iui.acm.org/2024/index.html

Deadlines:
Abstract submission:  October 2, 2023
Full Submission: October 9, 2023

ACM Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI) 2024 is the 29th annual premiere venue, where researchers and practitioners meet and discuss state-of-the-art advances at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Ideal IUI submissions should address practical HCI challenges using machine intelligence and discuss both computational and human-centric aspects of such methodologies, techniques and systems.

In addition to traditional IUI themes, we add this year a new theme of Large Language Models (LLMS) for the people. As LLMs become more powerful and more accessible, end users can interact with them in various ways and a wide variety of new applications become feasible. This raises new research questions regarding the interaction between users and generative AI models, including the design of new interactions and intelligent systems, when to trust systems powered with LLMs, fairness in LLMs, studying the effect of such models on people’s work and aligning user expectations with model capabilities.… read more. “Call: ACM IUI 2024: ACM Intelligent User Interfaces 2024 Conference”

Teleoperation from space: An astronaut aboard the ISS controls a robot team on Earth

[The InceptiveMind story below describes a recent, successful test of teleoperation and human-robot collaboration from space. See the original version for two more pictures, and the linked European Space Agency press statement for larger versions of those and other pictures; it also includes this quote from Thomas Krueger, head of ESA’s Human Robot Interaction Lab, partnering with DLR’s Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics:

“With Surface Avatar we [are] combining [a] direct teleoperation approach with supervised autonomy to control multiple robotic assets to accomplish complex tasks: picture a building site on Earth, where a crane might work alongside a bulldozer or excavator to get a big task done.”

“What we want to find out with this testing is how the astronauts perform in practice. What control mode do they choose? Do they have situational awareness by seeing the world through the eyes of multiple robots?… read more. “Teleoperation from space: An astronaut aboard the ISS controls a robot team on Earth”

Video walls and AR, XR that evoke presence are expanding on TV as tech improves, prices fall

[There’s a bit of tech talk and repetition in this story from TVNewsCheck, but the key point is clear: because technologies are improving while prices fall and workflows become simpler, more TV broadcasters are taking advantage of new creative options for using presence to present weather, news and sports stories.
