Deadline for abstracts and bios: December 31, 2019

We are delighted to announce the 4th Posthuman Global Symposium, to be held at New York University, New York, USA. This Symposium is dedicated to exploring the importance of posthuman agency in the interrelated significations of human and non-human realms. We intend to spark a deep and multilayered analysis of posthuman agency both as praxis and as a moral stance on the current global issues, as exemplified by its advocacy of environmentalism, cyborg rights, animal personhood, sustainable advanced technologies and ethical economies. We wish to examine posthuman agency from a variety of perspectives, including but not limited to: philosophy, natural and social sciences, law, religion, technology, mindfulness, and the arts.

Areas of interest include: human ways of living in the anthropocene; artificial intelligence, robots and ethical technology; the ethics of human enhancement and biotechnologies; genetic privacy; technological addiction; environmental sustainability; power, equity and the global dynamics of human interactions with the nonhuman world; drones, space, big data and co-existence; spirituality, religions and mindfulness in the posthuman age; and related topics.… read more. “Call: 4th Global Posthuman Symposium: “Posthuman Agency””

The Pentagon wants VR to train for nuclear war

[The U.S. military is considering how to use presence-evoking technologies to help prepare for difficult to imagine challenges, as reported in this story from Popular Mechanics; see coverage in Nextgov for additional details. –Matthew]

The Pentagon Wants VR To Train for Nuclear War

The tech would allow troops to train to counter nuclear and radiological weapons, including dirty bombs.

By Kyle Mizokami
July 9, 2019

The U.S. Department of Defense is considering using virtual reality technology to train military personnel who might someday come up against dirty bombs and other radioactive weapons. The Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which typically concerns itself with responding to weapons of mass destruction, wants to use VR as a training tool to teach soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen how to respond to “radiological threats,” from dirty bombs to nuclear weapons.

The DTRA posted a solicitation to industry on the FedBizOpps web site.… read more. “The Pentagon wants VR to train for nuclear war”

Call: THE PICTURESQUE: Visual Pleasure and Intermediality in-between Contemporary Cinema, Art and Digital Culture Conference

[Apologies for the late notice (I just saw this); if you’re interested consider contacting the organizers about a late submission. –Matthew]

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

THE PICTURESQUE: Visual Pleasure and Intermediality in-between Contemporary Cinema, Art and Digital Culture

International film and media studies conference organized by the Sapientia University in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), within the framework of the research project supported by the UEFISCDI
25-26 October, 2019
http://film.sapientia.ro/en/conferences/the-picturesque-visual-pleasure-and-intermediality

Deadline for proposals: July 15, 2019

Continuing our series of conferences dedicated to rethinking intermediality in contemporary cinema and visual culture, we propose to initiate a discussion around aspects of intermediality that may unfold from the perspective of the picturesque.

The much-debated notion inherited from the art theories of the late 18th century originally denoted both an aesthetic quality (something pleasing to the eye situated between the serenely beautiful and the awe-inspiring sublime) and a particular visual impression (something that looks like a picture in nature).… read more. “Call: THE PICTURESQUE: Visual Pleasure and Intermediality in-between Contemporary Cinema, Art and Digital Culture Conference”

A sequel for prescient 2012 augmented reality concept film “Sight”

[Fiction can often inspire and/or serve as a warning about the future; this story from Fast Company notes how quickly a short concept film about augmented reality had both effects, and describes a planned sequel. See the original story for three more images, the original film “Sight” and a behind-the-scenes video about the sequel, and see the project’s Kickstarter page for much more information. –Matthew]

The capacity to integrate self-related information across multiple sensory channels is fundamental to building cohesive representations of our self, body and world. Self-perception scaffolds both our subjective experience of being present, in the here and now, and our successful navigation in a complex physical and social environment.

Recent years have seen a substantial increase in research aiming at implementing complex forms of mental states such as self-consciousness in artificial agents such as robots and machines.… read more. “Call: DISSELF II: Self-Perception in Human and Artificial Agents Workshop”

Presence experiences that celebrate 50th anniversary of Apollo moon landing

[Several organizations have used different technologies to reproduce aspects of the July 1969 Apollo moon shot; the short story below from Space.com describes the Smithsonian’s “Apollo’s Moon Shot AR” app; more information about it, including a 2:00 minute video, is available from the Smithsonian website.

Engadget has a story about Google’s celebrations, including an “AR in Search” feature that lets you “explore a 3D recreation of the [Apollo 11] command module… If you like, you can bring the module into your living room in AR too.”

USA Today is offering “an eight-day live AR broadcast focusing on six historical events from [the] moon landing. From liftoff to landing, users will get to view the mission in real-time just as it happened 50 years ago” and a separate AR experience “in the USA TODAY mobile app telling the story of the hardware and technology that was used by NASA for the Apollo 11 mission.”… read more. “Presence experiences that celebrate 50th anniversary of Apollo moon landing”
