Call: “Drawology: Tracing the ether” (Remote creative collaborations)

Call for expressions of interest

Drawology: tracing the ether (Remote creative collaborations)
Investigators: Sarah Casey, Deborah Harty, Russ Marshall, Phil Sawdon

Deadlines:

  • Expressions: 22nd September 2023
  • Notification: 16th October 2023
  • Event: November 2023

This call for expressions of interest aims to identify artists, researchers and practitioners interested in drawing as collaborative practice with experience of engaging with remote creative collaborations. Those selected will be invited to an online event to share experiences of collaborative practice and partake in a round table discussion, to trace the potential for the use of technologies to facilitate international creative collaborations. The event also aims to establish an informal network to potentially act as participants in a research project. The project will build on previous iterations of drawology to explore the development of resilient and sustainable practice-led methodologies for supporting international creative collaborations. A further outcome is to identify co-authors for a journal paper exploring emergent themes from the event.

‘drawology’ seeks to explore the relationship of drawing and phenomenology within an expanded definition of drawing. The series of drawology events have looked to explore how drawing can record experience.

The first exhibition, ‘drawology’, (Bonington Gallery, 2013) sought to uncover whether it was possible to discern in the completed drawing the movement and thoughts of the drawer. ‘drawology: one year on’ (Lanchester Gallery, 2014) sought to track the progress of each artists’ work over a one-year period. ‘Performing Drawology’ (Bonington Gallery, 2016) focused on the process of drawing. The empty gallery space was used as a blank surface on which artists took turns in drawing and responding to the previous to create a collective live drawing. ‘tracing drawology’ began at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park in 2018 and looked to test the use of virtual spaces.

The session will take the form of a five-minute presentation from each participant exploring their experience of collaborative practice. Themes identified in the presentations will be used to inform the subsequent discussion. Expressions of interest should take the form of up to 250 words detailing your interest in participating in the event and any prior experience of remote creative collaborative practice.
