MOTIVATION:

The body shapes the mind: bodily representations structure the way humans perceive the world and the way they perceive other people. Cognitive sciences and social sciences altogether have stressed the importance of embodiment in social interaction, highlighting how interacting with others influences how we behave, perceive and think. As the sense of embodiment can be defined as the ensemble of sensations that arise in conjunction with being inside, having, and controlling a body, it definitely influences self-perceptions and actions regarding one’s own avatar, but also our social behaviours with embodied intelligent agents such as virtual humans and robots.… read more. “Call: ACE 2023: How Artificial Character Embodiment shapes user behaviour in multi-modal interaction (ICMI 2023 Workshop)”

MURALS: How an immersive take on Banksy’s artwork confronted the reality of the conflict in Ukraine

[An ISPR Presence News post from March 2023 describes the “War Up Close” project, which uses “360° panoramic photos, drone footage and 3D modelling” presented in virtual reality to tell the story of the devastation in Ukraine. The MURALS project that debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May takes a different but similarly immersive and compelling approach to the difficult challenge of impacting audiences used to short news updates and entertaining versions of war in television, movies and video games. The project is described in detail in this Little Black Book “Behind the Work” interview with the creators, where the original includes four more images and a 2:51 video (also available on Vimeo). For more details see coverage in Business Doc Europe. –Matthew]

We invite you to be present at the Zoom Performance Symposium, hosted by the Kunstakademie Münster in collaboration with the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf.

Like “zoom fatigue” and “zoom party”, the term “zoom performance” has become a catch-all for a phenomenon from the years 2020–21: the forms of online live performances that made use of video conferencing platforms. Although many other such platforms exist, Zoom became a typical feature of the pandemic experience of artists and art students and their audiences. In the post-pandemic moment, we want to examine what has been produced online, and how we can expand on a discipline that is much more than a product of circumstance.… read more. “Call: Zoom Performance Symposium: Practice and theory of online performance (free and online)”

Meet Illariy, the world’s first AI avatar that teaches Quechua on TikTok

[A group of faculty in Peru have created an AI-powered digital avatar that not only delivers news in an indigenous language on TikTok, but in a new program offers lessons in the ancient language. In the future they hope that Illariy “will function as a bot that can be asked questions and respond in Quechua.” It’s not hard to imagine a near-future in which not only languages but many other aspects of diverse cultures are preserved and taught via a combination of extended reality and artificial intelligence that allows users to interact with vivid simulations of places and people. See the original version of this story from Peru Reports for a second image and a short video of Illariy delivering the news; there’s also a 3:18 minute video on YouTube in which her creators describe their work (you can turn on Closed Caption subtitles by clicking on the “CC” icon and select English or another language to add an automatic translation).… read more. “Meet Illariy, the world’s first AI avatar that teaches Quechua on TikTok”

The future of the museum is an empty room that can take you anywhere

The Invisible Worlds exhibition at New York’s museum of natural history gives new meaning to the immersive experience.

By Alex Pasternack

How do you display nature? At New York’s 154-year-old American Museum of Natural History, there are exhibits of eye-popping specimens and artifacts: gems and minerals, dinosaurs and early human ancestors, the most detailed 3D atlas of the observable universe. And of course, there are the dioramas, the highly realistic replicas of landscapes, complete with taxidermy animals and replicas of long-dead humans.… read more. ““Invisible Worlds” opens in NYC: The future of the museum is an empty room that can take you anywhere”
