US Navy using VR and presence to train aircraft carrier flight deck crews

[There are clear benefits to using presence-evoking technologies for the training described in this story from Federal News Network. Tthe original story includes a 2:43 minute video (also available via YouTube) and for more details see the Navy’s press release. –Matthew]

Using virtual reality to train for one of the Navy’s most dangerous jobs

By Scott Maucione
December 13, 2018

Flight deck operations on an aircraft carrier have been described as a ballet of chaos. It’s an apt description for one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

The flight deck crew is responsible for assisting the takeoff and landing of jets at breakneck speeds, handling highly flammable jet fuel and negotiating catapult and arresting gear that allows planes to operate from a small strip in the middle of the ocean.

So you might not blame flight deck operators if they don’t want to go right out onto an aircraft carrier after some time off and getting a little rusty with their skills.… read more. “US Navy using VR and presence to train aircraft carrier flight deck crews”

Facebook wins patent for human-eye ‘retinal’ resolution VR headset

[Many factors interfere with effective presence illusions in virtual reality but image resolution is one of, if not the, most important. This story from UploadVR describes industry efforts to address the problem. The original story includes four more pictures, and read the comments section for some interesting insights. –Matthew]

Facebook Wins Patent For Human-Eye ‘Retinal’ Resolution VR Headset

By David Heaney
December 4th, 2018

Facebook has been awarded a patent for a head mounted display (HMD) which combines a large low resolution display and small high resolution display projected to where the user’s eye is pointed to achieve ‘retinal’ resolution.

‘Retinal’ or “retina” is a term often used to describe angular resolution which at least matches that of the center of the human eye.

Facebook is the company behind the Oculus brand of VR headsets and services. Originally purchased as a startup in 2014, Oculus is now a division of Facebook.… read more. “Facebook wins patent for human-eye ‘retinal’ resolution VR headset”
