KinectShop Augmented Reality lets users try on clothes in 3D

[From Fast Company]

KinectShop: The Next Generation Of Shopping [Exclusive Video]

A new augmented reality shopping platform for Xbox Kinect will allow users to try on clothes in true 3-D, share photos with friends, and store wish-listed items on smartphones for shopping on-the-go.

By Gregory Ferenstein
Jun 9, 2011

Virtual reality shopping just got a lot more real–and could soon become a lot more mainstream. “KinectShop” (working title), an augmented reality shopping platform for the Xbox Kinect, exploits the system’s new finger-recognition technology to allow shoppers to grab items from an unlimited shelf of clothes, see how accessories look at multiple angles, and share the photos with friends on Twitter and Facebook for a quick thumbs-up or down.

“The customer can visually see what an object looks like on them without even entering a retail store,” Steve Dawson, Technology Director for the Emerging Experiences group at Razorfish tells Fast Company.… read more. “KinectShop Augmented Reality lets users try on clothes in 3D”

Call: Haptics in Surgical Robotics workshop

Haptics in Surgical Robotics
Istanbul, June 21st, 2011

Abstract: Surgeons’ hands are their main tools. They intuitively process both visual and haptic senses to perform a surgery. Yet, in robotic surgery, the use of a teleoperated system removes the direct contact of hands with tissues and thus, diminishes the sense of touch. Although 3D stereoscopic vision and enhanced dexterity are fully exploited in this field, the tremendous potential of haptic feedback has been confined to research activities. Up to now, the essential role of haptic feedback has not been fully recognized by the medical community since its benefits have not been demonstrated for clinical use due to the technical challenges. This half‐day workshop aims at discussing these issues by bringing together surgeons, developers and research engineers with a strong experience of robotic surgery. First, we will identify the role of haptics in robotic surgery guided by medical needs.… read more. “Call: Haptics in Surgical Robotics workshop”

Immersive Communications uses mixed reality to replicate feeling of in-person interaction

[From GigaOm, where the story includes a 2:09 minute video]

Immersive Communications: The future of video collaboration?

By Simon Mackie Jun. 7, 2011

From the telepresence solutions of companies like Cisco and Polycom to inexpensive desktop videoconferencing apps from providers such as Skype and Tinychat, there are now video communication products available to suit every need and budget. However, even though the quality of video communication has greatly improved, it still cannot match the feeling of proximity generated by real, face-to-face conversation.

Telecom giant Alcatel Lucent’s research and development arm Bell Labs is hoping to replicate the feeling of in-person interaction with a fascinating concept it calls Immersive Communications. It differs from existing video products by using “mixed reality,” using cloud-based processing to insert the video feeds of real people into customizable artificial environments, and may offer some insight into what video communications may look like in the near future, as this [2:09 minute] promotional video shows.… read more. “Immersive Communications uses mixed reality to replicate feeling of in-person interaction”

Call: “Virtual Realities and Gaming” track at MKWI 2012 (Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik)

Track “Virtual Realities and Gaming”
at MKWI 2012 (Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik [European Conference on Computer Science])
Braunschweig, Germany

Deadline: 15th of September 2011

Background: In recent years virtual realities and computer games have attracted the attention of media and academics alike. The technological framework of virtual realities is constituted of 3D-based interaction, avatars and voice-over-IP, which surpass the richness and interactivity of existing web applications by far. The enhanced interactivity and social presence promote a sense of immersion, i.e. the feeling of “being there together”. The application of virtual realities has also found growing usage in the business context (f.i. within IBM and HP), where it can help fostering innovation. Furthermore, companies increasingly acknowledge the value of games and game mechanics to achieve positive effects such as an enhanced motivation of participation and creativity.

Computer games and virtual realities introduce a whole new field of research and a variety of research questions to the Information Systems Research.… read more. “Call: “Virtual Realities and Gaming” track at MKWI 2012 (Multikonferenz Wirtschaftsinformatik)”

Telepresence features on Airbus 2050 concept plane

[From Wired; more information including the excerpts that follow the story below, more images and video clips, is available in the Airbus report here]

Airbus shows off the sustainable and panoramic plane of 2050

By Mark Brown
14 June 11

Conceptual soothsayers at plane-builder Airbus have gazed 40 years into the future, to show what the aircraft cabin of 2050 might look like.

The first thing you’ll notice is that the claustrophobic fuselage shell is gone, now replaced by panoramic views of the sky above you. This is achieved by a twisting bionic structure — inspired by bird skeletons — and a transparent membrane.

Instead of splitting passengers up by class, they’ll be divided by the activities they want to engage in during the long haul trip. These personalised zones could become an interactive conference room with business partners on the ground, or a virtual reality golf course.… read more. “Telepresence features on Airbus 2050 concept plane”

Call: Ubi-MUI2011: International ACM Workshop on Ubiquitous Meta User Interfaces

Call for Papers

Ubi-MUI2011: International ACM Workshop on Ubiquitous Meta User Interfaces
http://www.dai-labor.de/Ubi-MUI2011/

In conjunction with
ACM Multimedia 2011, Scottsdale, Arizona, US, Nov 28 – Dec 1
http://www.acmmm11.org/

Intelligent Environments have the vision of enhancing our everyday environment and interaction with its objects by sensing, computing, and communication capabilities. Major characteristics of such environments are the increasing number of intelligent devices (ubiquity), their complexity, and their integration into the background (transparency). Devices will disappear or blend into the background and will be invisible to the user. However, because of this transparency, users fail to develop an adequate mental model for interaction with such environments. To overcome these challenges, new types of user interfaces are required that will represent intelligent environments. Such representative user interfaces create an overall system image for intelligent environments in order to help users to better understand the intelligent environment.… read more. “Call: Ubi-MUI2011: International ACM Workshop on Ubiquitous Meta User Interfaces”

Tactile Brush provides illusions to send shivers down a gamer’s spine

[From New Scientist; a 1:23 minute video is available here]

Illusions to send shivers down a gamer’s spine

25 May 2011 by Jim Giles
Magazine issue 2813.

You are playing a video game, and your avatar is creeping into a haunted house at the dead of night. Suddenly, you freeze in your chair. Something is crawling up your back…

Whether this idea appeals or not, researchers at Disney have made such sensations possible by inventing a system that fools players into thinking that objects are moving against their skin.

Their brainchild, known as Tactile Brush, creates the illusion of being touched by anything from falling rain to crawling insects.

One of the illusions the team employs is called apparent tactile motion. If two vibrating objects are placed close together on skin in quick succession, people often experience this as a single vibration moving between the two points of contact.… read more. “Tactile Brush provides illusions to send shivers down a gamer’s spine”

Immersive Technology Fuels Infantry Simulators

Cheryl Pellerin
American Forces Press Service

May 16, 2011 WASHINGTON | Rocket-propelled grenades explode, villagers scream in Arabic, squad members move together through the rough streets past animal pens and bazaar stalls, and the hot air carries local sounds and smells.

It’s not Afghanistan’s Helmand province. It’s a 130,000-square-foot building on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in southern California.

There, at the Infantry Immersion Trainer, a Defense Department program combines infrastructure, actors, and three-dimensional immersive technologies that replicate the sights, situations and smells of war in the Middle East to help Marines and soldiers make better, faster decisions on the ground.

M.K. Tribbie is oversight executive for the Future Immersive Training Environment, called FITE. The environment merges elements of virtual reality, computer gaming and virtual worlds into an interactive training tool that is being tested at several Marine Corps and Army bases around the country, Tribbie said.… read more. “Future Immersive Training Environment (FITE) prepares US infantry”
