Professor of Serious Gaming for Complex Multi-Actor Systems, Decision-and Policy Making

Technology, Policy and Management

The Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management contributes to sustainable solutions for technical challenges in society by combining the insights from engineering with the humanities and the social sciences.

Within the TPM Department of Multi-actor Systems (MAS), the Policy, Organisation, Law and Gaming (POLG) section researches the interfaces between technology, governance and the law. It combines fundamental research with contracted research and consultancy. The chair will be part of this POLG section.  The POLG research group combines many disciplines. It has acquired expertise in a wide range of sectors and works in four domains:

  • Public Policy, Organisation & Management
  • Serious Gaming & Simulation Gaming
  • Judicial Questions

The gaming research group is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together researchers with backgrounds in policy sciences, engineering, organization, law, the arts, computer sciences and systems engineering. The many activities in the field of gaming are promoted and co-ordinated by the TPM Centre for Process Management and Simulation (CPS),  an established centre for research and professional applications of gaming simulation (including serious gaming and 3D virtual game worlds) for multi-actor decision and policy-making and much related to it, as well as for professional learning and training.

Job description

The candidate’s main tasks and responsibilities are

  • to steer his/her serious gaming simulation research portfolio towards high academic quality and relevance and high international visibility.
  • to build and maintain an international network in both the international scientific community and the community of knowledge users (government and the private sector).
  • to secure external research funding from research programmes and business partners.
  • to manage the human and financial resources of TPM’s gaming group.
  • to take part in managerial tasks for the TPM faculty and POLG section.
  • to (help) ensure high visibility of TPM/TU Delft and affiliated research programmes such as the NGI programme in the area of gaming simulation through publications in high-impact scientific journals, through active international research collaboration and maintaining relevant networks.
  • to (help) develop new teaching modules in this area, targeted towards MSc and PhD students.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant field of social science, such as policy sciences, organization and management, policy analysis, or systems analysis. He/she should have proven experience as an independent and productive researcher as demonstrated by publications in scientific journals relevant to the research area. She/he should be well embedded in the international scientific community of gaming-simulation, policy sciences and policy analysis, and infrastructures. The candidate preferably has proven experience with relevant quantitative, qualitative and design research methods, and demonstrable affinity for the integrated sociotechnical systems approach to infrastructure systems as practiced at the TPM faculty. He/she preferably also has a multidisciplinary research attitude, a track record in multidisciplinary research collaboration and excellent communication skills.
