New Version Of Shrek Movie Officially Releasing 25 Years Later

Shrek is getting new life in a re-release, but in an unexpected format.

The fantasy series kicked off a quarter-century ago in 2001. The original movie earned strong critical reviews and a hefty box office total, making $489.7 million on an estimated $60 million budget. Due to its success, it spawned multiple sequels and the spinoff Puss in Boots series, many of which have garnered awards attention. Now, the franchise is gearing up with Shrek 5 slated for release next year.

As the original movie celebrates its 25th anniversary, immersive experience company Cosm has announced a new Shrek-centered shared reality experience. This experience will allow audiences to “step inside the world of the original film.” They will see key franchise locations born in this 2001 movie, including Shrek’s Swamp and Dragon’s Keep, while their favorite animated characters go on the journey with them. The whole experience will be displayed in an extremely high-resolution (12K+) LED dome.

This modernized way of experiencing Shrek will not be completely divorced from the original film’s intent. The movie will be presented in its original 16:9 format and “will remain the hero,” according to the press release. As it is presented now, the LED shared reality show will be a complement, immersing audiences further in the story while the movie plays.

This experience will be part of a multi-year contract between Cosm and Universal Film. Shrek will be the starting point for a brand-new model, which will allow more films to be presented in Shared Reality. This is Cosm’s second partnership with a major movie studio using their dome technology, representing a potential trend towards more Shared Reality experiences.

Universal Entertainment’s Chief Brand Officer David O’Connor explained how it is “pushing boundaries” and referred to it as an “interactive trip.” He even suggested the extent to which the Cosm partnership would shape the industry, calling it “an exciting new frontier for our brands and for the future of entertainment.” Check out O’Connor’s full quote below:

We are so proud to bring Shrek to life in this incredible way, for audiences to experience twenty-five years after its initial debut, and this newfound partnership continues to reinforce our confidence in what is truly possible for immersive entertainment.”

Shrek fans will not have to wait very long before this Shared Reality vision becomes reality. This fall, audiences will be able to buy tickets for the show in Cosm’s venues in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, and Detroit. In addition, this project will create great momentum for the Shrek franchise as it soon releases its fifth mothership series installment.

The Cosm project joins a growing collection of physical “Shrek” experiences, including two relatively new theme park areas in the United States.

At Universal Studios Florida, Shrek is one of the major characters represented in DreamWorks Land, which opened in 2024. Meet Donkey and Shrek at Shrek’s Swamp Meet, outside Shrek’s cottage. Let the kids run around Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres play area. Swamp Snacks also carries the franchise into the land’s food offerings, including the Shrekzel.

Shrek received an entire land when Universal Kids Resort opened July 1, 2026, in Frisco, Texas. DreamWorks’ Shrek’s Swamp includes Shrek & Fiona’s Happily Ogre After — the first Shrek-themed ride in the United States — along with Shrek’s Swamp Rompin’ Stomp playground, Shrek’s Swamp Splash and Smash water play area and character encounters with Shrek and Fiona.
