I am organizing a panel proposal for the International Communication Association (ICA) 2027 conference exploring AI’s growing role as a participant in communication and what this means for human agency, authenticity, relationships, trust, and connection.
As AI increasingly writes messages, advises decisions, supports relationships, assists leaders, and shapes organizational communication, the question is no longer simply how humans use AI, but what happens when AI becomes part of the communicative process itself.
In keeping with ICA’s theme, “Centering the Human: Communication in an Age of Uncertainty,” the panel asks: Where is the human when communication is increasingly created, mediated, or influenced by AI?
Topics may include human-machine communication, interpersonal relationships, leadership/workplace AI, PR and stakeholder communication, intercultural perspectives, authenticity, trust, identity, ethics, disclosure, agency, or communication education. International and cross-cultural perspectives are especially encouraged.
Interested scholars should email Dr. Laurie Lawrence, Florida State University Panama City, at [email protected] by October 16, 2026 with a 150-word abstract, brief 2–3 sentence bio, and institutional affiliation.
