At Charité Berlin we have a vacancy for a postdoctoral position in the project Ethics of Artificial Intelligence. The project is conducted within the Cluster of Excellence “Science of Intelligence” (SCIOI, https://www.scioi.de) in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin.
The project will be jointly headed by Prof. Dr. John-Dylan Haynes and Dr. Scott Robbins. The research project explores ethical issues that arise in the context of AI research.
SCIOI involves researchers from several relevant disciplines, including artificial intelligence, machine learning, control, robotics, computer vision, behavioral biology, psychology, educational science, neuroscience and philosophy. The cluster has multiple interdisciplinary research projects that combine analytical and synthetic approaches to address central aspects of individual, social, and collective intelligence. Researchers in the cluster investigate questions related to robotics, artificial intelligence, and biological intelligence research.
The current project focuses on the ethical implications of intelligence research across multiple stages of the research process, ranging from research design and data acquisition to the potential impact of future research results. The project will implement a span of methods, including conceptual analysis, philosophical discourse analysis, expert interviews, focus groups, and predictive assessments. The postholder will work on designing conducting, analysing, and disseminating our ethics-oriented research in terms of presentations, project reports, and publications. Participation in research colloquia, lecture series, and workshops, as well as active participation in the cluster’s research activities is expected.
The call is aimed at postdoc researchers with a Doctoral degree / PhD in ethics, philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, computer science or a related discipline. The applicant should ideally have substantial knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas: applied ethics and ethics of technology, philosophy and sociology of science and technology, behavioral research techniques (such as questionnaires and online polls) and/or methods of philosophical conceptual analysis. A candidate with a background in computer science or artificial intelligence would be an additional benefit, but not necessary. Excellent written and spoken English is also required.
Additional useful competences include experience with methods and processes of technological impact assessment; experience in conducting expert interviews and focus group discussions; research experience in the area of robotics and artificial intelligence; background in programming, engineering, or natural science; German language skills.
The fixed-term project will start on the 1.10.2023 and run until 31.12.2025. Salary grade ist TVöD/VKA E13.
