Technology special issue of the Journal of Continental Philosophy
https://www.pdcnet.org/jcp/Journal-of-Continental-Philosophy
Submission deadline: August 18, 2023
Reflections on technology throughout the twentieth century centered largely on instrumental or anthropological accounts of machines, analog technologies, and industrial automation. As powerful new digital forms of technology recast modes of human activity and experience, contemporary reflections on technology have become much more expansive, encompassing not only machines and artefacts but entire ways of thinking, being, and relating to the world.
Recent developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning (as well as robotic automation, behavioral analytics, cloud computation, etc.) have only made the question of technology—of what it is, and of what relations we hold with it—more prescient than ever. This special issue of the Journal of Continental Philosophy invites contributions that address this question in its many forms, including:
- How have contemporary approaches to technology and technical knowledge transformed the ways we understand human experience, interaction, and relations with the world?
- To what extent are our experiences of our self mediated by digitization and modulations of data?
- What is at stake in art, language, and aesthetics in the age of synthetic media?
- Is genuine agency possible in a datafied world?
- Can technological mediation be divested from corporate instrumentalism?
- Does technology offer humans a means to move beyond anthropocentrism?
- To what extent is technology arbitrated by its utopian and dystopian dimensions, its distinctions between the virtual and the real, the natural and the anthropological, or the phenomenological and the ontological?
Contributions addressing these questions are welcome: scholarly articles (including translations), interviews, round table discussions, works of literature.
Please send submissions and proposals by 18 August 2023 to: jcp@westernsydney.edu.au
