The 7th annual pre-conference on Human-Machine Communication (HMC) aims to facilitate discussions about theories, methodologies, findings, opportunities, and challenges related to “authenticity” in HMC. We focus on two primary areas: “authenticity in communication between humans and machines” and “authenticity in HMC research.”
1) AUTHENTICITY IN COMMUNICATION BETWEEN HUMANS AND MACHINES:
Some examples of specific areas of interests/questions in this focus include the following, but are NOT limited to:
- What (theoretical) concepts are suitable for understanding authenticity in HMC (e.g., self-disclosure, trust)?
- How does authenticity empirically manifest in HMC?
- What are the roles and outcomes of authenticity in HMC (e.g., trust, acceptance, attitudes, perceptions)?
- What influences authenticity in HMC (e.g., nature of the machine, user characteristics, communication contexts/situations)?
2) AUTHENTICITY IN HMC RESEARCH:
Some examples of specific areas of interests/questions in this focus include the following, but are NOT limited to:
- How authentically can existing theoretical approaches (e.g., interpersonal communication theories) conceptualize HMC? What are new perspectives and approaches that can authentically capture the essence of HMC?
- How authentically can we measure and empirically test HMC?
- What are the obstacles and challenges in developing authenticity in HMC research?
GOALS
Continuing on the path of the previous HMC pre-conferences, we have two major goals for this event. First, we aim to create a space for new perspectives, provocative ideas, in-depth discussions, and critical thinking. Second, we aim to create dynamic networking opportunities that can cultivate a strong mentorship community and that can help find potential collaborators. We focus on connecting ICA scholars with various methodological expertises (e.g., ethnography, network analysis, heterogeneous engineering, agent experimentation), interest group affiliations, global locations, and communication worldviews to explore fertile ground and collaborations, enabling us to move forward in a robust, inclusive, and broadly informed HMC research area.
SUBMISSION TYPE: SHORT PAPERS
Papers should be 1000-1500 words not including title page, tables, and references. The paper should detail what the scholar plans to present and how this relates to the overall focus of the pre-conference given above. Taking into account the accepted submissions, the organizers will assign the papers to curated panel sessions as well as to sessions with more interactive formats. The pre-conference is open to all sorts of scholarship, both empirical and theoretical, and any methodology is welcomed (e.g., quantitative, qualitative). We also welcome position/reflection papers. Papers must be written in English and may use any internally consistent formatting and citation style. Submissions will be peer-reviewed, and it is expected that all first authors will review 2-3 other submissions. Review criteria include relevance, originality, rigor, generativity, and implications/utility.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submit two separate documents in Pdf: (1) cover page and (2) anonymized manuscript
- Cover page should include the following: Title of the paper, author information (full name, affiliation, and email addresses for all authors), and word count.
- Anonymized manuscript should include a title on the first page without identifying author information. Manuscripts must be properly anonymized. This includes removing all author names and affiliations from the manuscript and from the name of the file and metadata. Authors should be careful that in-text and reference citations do not disclose aspects of author identity (particularly references to works “in print” or “in review”). Please note that submissions that are not properly anonymized may be returned to the submitter.
