POSITION SUMMARY:

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the New Jersey Institute of Technology seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to play a pivotal role in advancing our degree programs in communication/media and cyberpsychology. The communication/media program offers an interdisciplinary curriculum in communication and media technology with core courses covering all current modes of digital interaction. Launched in 2021, the cyberpsychology program focuses on the psychological and psychosocial effects of digital technologies on individuals, groups, and societies.

Key criteria for selection will include capacity to develop an externally funded research program, to demonstrate a commitment to instructional excellence for diverse student populations, and to contribute to the affairs of a large and robust department that is part of a polytechnic university.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • The successful candidate is expected to establish an externally funded research program and to demonstrate excellence in teaching.
  • Duties will include delivering courses and/or administering labs, actively pursuing opportunities for external research funding, advising students, and participating in outreach to recruit a diverse population of high-quality students.
  • The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences is an interdisciplinary community of researchers and educators that encourages state-of-the art pedagogy consistent with the aims of a technologically intensive university and applicants should evince how they will participate in the pursuit of this mission.

PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Candidates should have a Ph.D. in communication, media studies, psychology, sociology, political science, or a related field.
  • Scholarly interest and/or a recognized record of academic achievement in information science, human-computer interaction, or an aligned social science field would be beneficial. Other areas of specialization can include, but are not limited to, social media studies, virtual/augmented reality, games and gaming, artificial intelligence, online-identity formation, digital learning, social network analysis, media psychology, media mis/disinformation, media/information literacy, media policy, social media regulation, strategic communication, and media ethics.
  • At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
