JOB DESCRIPTION:

Farmingdale State College invites applications for a full-time lecturer in Interaction Design (IXD) and Graphic Design. Lecturer positions are non-tenure track. The IXD program is part of the NASAD accredited Visual Communications department. The successful candidate will join a program that encourages students to learn the value of creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and social responsibility.

The program is seeking a faculty member with a strong interaction design background and professional practice as a graphic designer. The candidate should have experience in and ability to teach user interface design, information design, prototyping and design thinking to create human-centered solutions. The ability to teach basic graphic design for digital and print applications or introductory general education arts courses would be a plus.

The appointee’s primary function is to develop and teach core Interaction Design courses, emphasizing visual design, user interface and design thinking. Other areas will include User Interaction, Typography for Interaction, Information Architecture, Prototyping Tools, and Design for Social Change. Graphic design teaching will focus on basic graphic design and typography. The faculty member is expected to teach classes across multiple formats, including hybrid and online classes as well as traditional face to face classes.

Lecturers are responsible for teaching 15 contact hours per semester, and service to the Department and the School, including activities such as advising students and serving on departmental committees. Interaction Design Lecturers are also responsible for maintaining their professional qualifications and skills as an interaction designer. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and a high level of competence in teaching. Candidates invited for interviews will be asked to create and share a presentation on their professional practice, and a separate teaching demonstration.

REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (MA, MFA, MS) in Interaction Design, Interactive Media, Digital Media, User Experience, Digital Design, Graphic Design or closely related fields.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of college-level teaching experience.
  • The ability to teach web design and/or motion design.

This is a 10-month UUP faculty position.
