XR Research Awards 2021

Submission deadline: December 10, 2021

We offer €40,000 in equipment and support for researchers or content creators to study the impact of virtual reality on behaviour. Sign up now for a chance to win!

Whilst numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of virtual reality for training,  understanding behaviour, and mental health, more research is needed to into XR and to ensure the rapid yet safe adoption of immersive technologies.

Key issues to address are:

  • Demonstrating that VR simulations create responses that match real life responses.
  • Demonstrating that VR can alter behaviour.

Whilst most research has relied on questionnaires administered before, during or after an experience, this method is subjective, prone to recall bias and may break the sense of immersion.

The XR Research Awards aims to support projects that promote objective evaluation of behavioural responses to build the strong evidence base for VR that is vital for wider adoption.

The XR Research Awards will provide researchers and content creators with grants of equipment and technical support for projects aiming to evaluate the effects of virtual reality on behaviour.

There are two award categories:

  • Researcher award: covering all fields from psychology, neuroscience, human computer interaction, education and training.
  • Developer award: for content creators and developers interested in validating the effectiveness of their content with the support of our research team and scientific advisors.

1st Prize bundle worth over €20,000:

  • Emteq Labs biosensing research system plus €2,500 in cash and €5,500 in support
  • Pico Neo 3 Eye plus Display Port lead for mobile or PC VR
  • Cognitive3D spatial analytics research package worth €5,000
  • Plux Biosignals 4-channel Explorer research system plus support worth €2,000

Two €10,000 runner-up prizes:

  • For two finalists, Emteq Labs will provide hardware (emteqPRO mask integrated into the Pico Neo 3 Eye plus Display Port lead for mobile or PC VR). Also support, including scientific advice from leading researchers to conduct a study evaluating the impact of their VR experience.
  • Support for the publication of research findings will be on offer for suitable projects

A completed application will be judged by this cohort of multidisciplinary specialists:

22nd of October 2021: Competition opens
