Noveto N1 personal spatial audio ‘beams’ sound to listeners even as they move around a room

[The new spatial audio product described in this story from DesignTAXI enhances presence by beaming sound to individual listeners even as they move around a room, essentially making the technology invisible; the company’s press release says it produces an “immersive” and “magical sensory experience” that “breaks down the remoteness of remote-working with video-callers feeling like they are in the same room and supports vital at-home wellness.” The original story includes five different images and one of the several videos available on the company’s YouTube channel. –Matthew]

Personal Spatial Audio ‘Beamed’ To Listeners Can Follow Them Around A Room

Immersive and spatial audio has been something that Apple has been delving into lately, but the tech giant isn’t the only one interested. A company called Noveto launched a Kickstarter earlier this year to fund its smart speaker, the SoundBeamer, which then evolved into the N1.

As the SoundBeamer name might suggest, this speaker does indeed beam sound: to be precise, immersive audio is sent straight to the listener’s ears without affecting others in the nearby vicinity, no speakers or headphones required.

This also “follows” the user around even if they get up and move about, targeting just their ears and no one else’s.

The way the Noveto Audio Technology works is through leveraging “non-audible acoustic waves” and “beamforming,” which means that audio is “placed” just outside the listener’s ears. These waves are pushed into the air through the proprietary Noveto Transducer Array, controlled by a chipset and software.

From the outside, they’re hidden behind a fabric cover that makes the device look like a regular speaker.

To track the user and follow them around, a 3D sensing module and camera are built into the hardware to focus specifically on the ears, which delivers personalized immersive audio. This is even in settings where other people are present. “Move your head in any direction and the two sound pockets will follow,” the company promises.

New Atlas reports that calibrated audio remains just outside the ears at sound pressure levels of up to 85 dB.

Noveto has also stated that -20dB attenuation will keep the audio “personal to you,” which means that “if someone talks to you normally over a video call, someone a meter away will only hear a whisper.”

Additionally, there is an AI-based built-in voice, facial and gesture recognition feature to complement ambient sound monitoring. This is said to “enable a very natural and intuitive interaction, a cornerstone for the new generation of smart home apps and services.”

The N1’s exterior touts a glass-fronted LED display mounted on an aluminium frame and adjustable stand. Communication apps and Alexa are also integrated, alongside Bluetooth pairing, volume control and microphone muting. There is also a USB-C port and a 3.5mm jack for external audio devices.

Noveto confirms in a news release that production will start in December 2021, in time for the official launch at CES in Las Vegas in early January 2022. There, further availability details will be confirmed.
