Position Summary:

The postdoctoral research associate serves as the data manager for the Virtual Fitness Buddy Ecosystem project. They ensure data is downloaded and stored and trained in pertinent methodologies. They carry out quality assurance measures and prepare data for statistical analyses. They assist with data analysis and manuscript development.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

This position requires a Ph.D. in Communication (with an emphasis in technology, video games, virtual environments), Social Psychology, Public Health, or related discipline.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Managing lab operations (40%)
  • Analyzing and collecting quantitative and qualitative data (20%)
  • Preparing and submitting human subject committee proposals, writing grants, reviewing literature, preparing and submitting manuscripts (20%)
  • Developing virtual simulations (20%)

Position Summary:

The position provides individuals who hold a doctoral degree with the opportunity to receive mentorship and training from researchers working on designing and implementing social science studies on immersive virtual worlds. The successful applicant will work closely with the principal investigator, Dr. Sun Joo (Grace) Ahn, and co-investigators to conduct current and planned research projects.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

Education: The applicant should hold a doctoral degree or have a doctoral degree in hand by August 10, 2020.

Qualifications: Ph.D. in Communication (with an emphasis in technology, video games, virtual environments), Social Psychology, or related discipline. Rigorous education in social science research. Quantitative data collection and analysis (have training in quantitative statistical methods). Qualitative data collection and analysis. Project development and management. Demonstrated competence in critical thinking, scientific writing, and oral presentation skills. Can work independently and take a lead role on projects, under supervision and guidance of a principal investigator. Effective communication skills. Experience in working with and developing video games and/or virtual environments. Community engagement. Experience with student supervision. Grant writing.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Percentage of time:  60:

  • Quantitative data collection and analysis
  • Qualitative data collection and analysis
  • Recruitment and retention of participants for lab and field studies
  • Manuscript preparation, submission, and revision
  • Support lab operation and management
  • Project development and management
  • Generate literature reviews
  • Generate ideas for future projects and research studies
  • Assist grant writing
  • Preparation of institutional review board protocols and submissions
  • Participate in regular meetings with PI and collaborators
  • Manage and maintain hardware and software in labs
  • Assist in the development of virtual experiences

Percentage of time:  20:

  • Oversee graduate research assistant activities
  • Assist training of graduate students
  • Monitor and supervise graduate research assistant productivity
  • Assist graduate and undergraduate student mentoring

Percentage of time:  10:

  • Secure necessary supplies for research projects
  • Generate semi-annual project reports

Percentage of time:  10:

  • Recruit graduate and undergraduate students
  • Assist in annual student evaluations
