Call: Canadian Game Studies Association (CGSA) 2017 Conference

Call for Papers 2017 — Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences
Canadian Game Studies Association (CGSA)
May 31 – June 2
Toronto, Canada

Submission Deadline: January 10, 2017

The 2017 Canadian Game Studies Association (CGSA/ACÉV) annual conference will be May 31 to June 2 in Toronto, Ontario in conjunction with the Congress of the Humanities & Social Sciences. This year’s Congress theme is “From Far and Wide: The Next 150”.

We invite submissions from all disciplines from researchers working on or around games including digital and non-digital games. In keeping with this year’s call for proposals, we also invite submissions that address futures – what will game studies look like in 5 years or in 10 or even 150 years from now? What new theories, approaches, methodologies need to be developed to realize that future? And what new challenges does game studies face under conditions of shifting demographics, landscapes, and geographies and cultures? Graduate student submissions are welcome and encouraged!

SUBMISSIONS:

This year we will be accepting proposals for four kinds of submissions:

1. INDIVIDUAL PAPER SUBMISSIONS
Please submit a blinded abstract no longer than 500 words (excluding references).

2. PANEL SUBMISSION
Panel submissions must include a 500-word panel overview and 250 words describing each individual presentation. The panel organizer/chair should assemble all materials and submit as a single submission to Easy Chair. When submitting the panel to EasyChair, the organizer/chair should be listed as corresponding author, and all other panel participants should be listed as co-authors.

We encourage participants to submit proposals for interdisciplinary panels, as well as to consider the possibility of organizing joint sessions with other scholarly associations. CGSA welcomes proposals for joint panels with FSAC and Digital Humanities.

Please indicate clearly if your panel submission is intended to be a joint session with another scholarly association. You and your panellists need to be members of one of these three associations, but not necessarily all.

3. GAME DEMOS
CGSA is proud to invite critical makers, research-creators, and other game designers to submit their work to our Game Demo track. Please submit a 250-word description of your game. In addition to the description, provide a list of equipment/space needed to display your game.

4. CREATIVE WORK/WORKSHOPS/OTHER FORMATS
CGSA welcomes other types of submissions including workshops, fishbowls, etc. Please contact the 2016 CGSA chairs in advance of the deadline with a brief summary of your proposed submission, anticipated equipment needs, and an estimated length of time requested.

The deadline for submission is January 10, 2017.

Please submit all proposals via EasyChair at https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cgsa2017

The 2017 CGSA co-chairs are Felan Parker (felan.parker@outlook.com) and Jennifer Jenson (jjjenson@gmail.com). The local coordinator is Daniel Joseph.
