Han the humanoid robot understands your facial expressions and can respond in kind

[Watch the 2:08 minute video of Han, the latest creation from Hanson Robotics, and see if we’ve reached Mori’s uncanny valley. The story from the International Business Times also includes another image. Coverage by Reuters includes another video and notes that Han’s female counterpart Eva is scheduled to soon interact with the public in various roles. –Matthew]

Talking to humanoid robot Han

Han the humanoid robot understands your facial expressions and can respond in kind [Video]

By Mary-Ann Russon
April 21, 2015

Hanson Robotics has debuted a humanoid robot that is able to recognise and understand people’s facial expressions, hold a conversation and respond appropriately with its own expressions.

Han the robot is rather unnerving – he features the humanoid head, neck and torso of a middle-aged English man, while the rest of his electronic innards are on show in a clear body. There are cameras in his eyes and chest that enable him to detect the face and emotions of the human standing in front of it.… read more. “Han the humanoid robot understands your facial expressions and can respond in kind”

VR film installation puts disassociative twist on awkward family dinners

[This description of an intriguing project refers to nearly every type of presence but never uses the term; The Creator’s Project story includes more pictures and a 2:41 minute video; more information can be found in coverage by The Irish Times, and a 5:41 minute interview with the artists is available on Vimeo. –Matthew]

The Doghouse VR

Virtual Reality Film Installation Puts a Disassociative Twist on Awkward Family Dinners

By Beckett Mufson — May 3 2015

There may be two sides to every story, but in virtual reality film installation The Doghouse, which landed at the UK’s 2015 Flatpack Film Festival in March, you get to see both with your own eyes. Five Oculus Rift headsets sit beside the forks, knives, and plates of a set table, each one taking you inside the head of a different character at an uncomfortable family dinner—which, naturally, everyone remembers differently.… read more. “VR film installation puts disassociative twist on awkward family dinners”

Call: “The Significance of Simulation” (TRANSOR workshop)

Call for Papers: TRANSOR workshop, “The Significance of Simulation”
University of Southern Denmark, Kolding Campus. June 18-19, 2015.

Sponsored by the Research Network TRANSOR (Transdisciplinary Studies in Social Robotics – http://www.transor.org).

Keynote Address: John Sullins (Sonoma State University, California),
“Building Artificial Phronesis: A New Approach?” (provisional title)

BACKGROUND / RATIONALE

As social robots continue their rapid development and deployment, “simulation” has emerged as a key focus in a number of ways. For example, robots are currently incapable of experiencing emotions as conscious and embodied beings: in many examples, however, “artificial emotions” can be emulated and expressed by social robots in diverse ways that suffice to persuade their human interactors that the robot in fact feels a basic emotion such as care. Building in artificial emotions is critical for, e.g., the therapeutic roles of carebots such as Paro; at the same time, however, there are important ethical considerations as to whether or not artificial emotions thereby qualify as an unethical form of simulation or trickery.… read more. “Call: “The Significance of Simulation” (TRANSOR workshop)”

A bee’s-eye view of the making of Patron Tequila: Drones are filming seriously jaw-dropping VR video for brands

[Drones provide a powerful tool for evoking presence; this Adweek story includes a 2:11 minute behind-the-scenes video about Patrón Tequila’s VR experience; a web-based version of the experience is available on the Patrón website and the press release is available at PR Newswire. –Matthew]

Drones Are Filming Seriously Jaw-Dropping Virtual Reality Video for Brands

Patrón goes inside the agave field

By Lauren Johnson
May 1, 2015

Ever since Twitter used drones to create buzzy six-second videos at Cannes last year, the remote-controlled devices have ditched their reputation as weird flying gizmos the military uses in favor of one as a new marketing platform. And brands are finding new ways to incorporate the videos into virtual-reality campaigns.

Today, Patrón and agency Firstborn are launching the “Art of Patrón Virtual Reality Experience,” giving viewers an inside look at how tequila is made at its Hacienda Patrón distillery in Jalisco, Mexico.… read more. “A bee’s-eye view of the making of Patron Tequila: Drones are filming seriously jaw-dropping VR video for brands”

How Social VR is going to fix society and humanize social media

[A thoughtful consideration of how and why the most effective and useful presence technology will evoke both social and spatial presence (with lots of interesting links); this is from Upload, where the article includes more images and a video. –Matthew]

Social VR

Will Mason
April 15, 2015

We reported earlier that reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian made reference to a reddit VR platform on the GearVR. In that article, I tried to imagine what that app might look like, especially within the constraints of the device. That was all a vision of a translation of the site, a port if you will, for VR. But what if they did something even more crazy? What if they turned reddit VR into something much better suited for the social medium of VR, something closer to the social VR experiences of VRChat, AltspaceVR, and Convrge?… read more. “How Social VR is going to fix society and humanize social media”

Virtual Reality, Real Impact! – Can virtual reality actually be fun?
Dr Fred Charles (Principal Lecturer in Visualisation)

We will cover the current status of Virtual Reality and the importance of interaction by players with virtual worlds, meaning how AI technologies and techniques allow for different types of interaction between the player, the virtual world and the virtual characters populating these virtual worlds. Even more essential to creating compelling experiences for the player using VR is how the player in the virtual world can interact, interfere and influence what happens, whether consciously or not.… read more. “Call: Virtual Reality, Real Impact! Feelreal VR Mask and Nirvana helmet let gamers smell and feel the action

Feelreal VR Mask and Nirvana helmet let gamers smell and feel the action

By Richard Moss
April 30, 2015

In what could just as easily prove to be a very bad idea as it could a good one, a startup company called Feelreal has created a virtual reality mask and helmet that lets you smell virtual environments. The company claims its devices stimulate both the olfactory (smell) and tactile (touch) senses, thereby immersing you in virtual water mist or wind or a battlefield.… read more. “Feelreal VR Mask and Nirvana helmet let gamers smell and feel the action”
