JOB DESCRIPTION
Technology enables participation. The goal of this post-doc position is to design and evaluate the use of augmented reality to support analysis of motoric functions, to develop a motion phenogram, providing a means for reflection on motion for both the individual and the medical practitioner. The project Technology in Motion (TIM) is to be pursued by a consortium with Leiden University Medical Centre and the University of Amsterdam. Research within the Systems Engineering Section of Delft University of Technology extends current research on presence, participation and virtual co-location in merging realities based on innovative head-mounted devices supporting 3D vision.
REQUIREMENTS
The candidate
- has a PhD in Computer Science or a comparable field
- speaks and writes English fluently
- has practical and theoretical background on interaction in multimodal environments
- has practical and theoretical background on virtual or augmented reality
- has experience in requirements engineering, software design and development
- has experience with different data analysis techniques
- has experience with quantitative and qualitative research methods
- has communicative and social skills required for interdisciplinary research.

At the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management, the Department of Multi-Actor Systems (MAS) develops innovative concepts, methods, and tools for understanding and facilitating multi-actor coordination and decision-making in large-scale, socio-technical systems. Its research focus is on governance and participation through coordination and decision-making processes (ranging from crowd-sourcing to operational planning decisions to international policy negotiations), while the research focus spans a diversity of socio-technical systems, such as urban areas, traffic management systems, energy markets, information systems for e-business, e-collaboration and e-government, and systems for water management and flood control.
Today’s society is in transition. Technology is changing the way people communicate and coordinate their activities in new social structures, with new forms of distributed governance. The design and management of such systems is the focus of the Participatory Systems Initiative – Systems Engineering’s research programme (see www.participatorysystems.org). Participatory systems are socio-technical ecological systems, such as large-scale, distributed infrastructural systems, that enable and support participation in today’s networked society. Distributed energy markets, the Smart Grid, dynamic supply chain management, and crisis/emergency management are examples of such systems. These are systems in which realities merge, in which participation and presence acquire a different stance.
