Project: Telemedicine: A Virtual Reality Solution

Telemedicine is the use of telecommunication and information technologies in order to provide clinical health care at a distance. It helps eliminate distance barriers and can improve access to medical services that would often not be consistently available and for example save lives in critical care and emergency situations.

This project will be investigating the challenge of providing a virtual reality solution for rich interactions between remote medical staff, working over the superfast broadband amongst different in South Yorkshire locations.

This studentship offers a valuable opportunity to work with the 3D Graphics and Virtual Reality group at University of Sheffield under the direction of Daniela Romano, senior Lecture, in a multidisciplinary team with an industrial partner. The School of Clinical Dentistry (Dr. Nicolas Martin, Senior Clinical Lecturer) will provide the context of use for the superfast remote virtual reality solution; while the industrial partner Digital Region South Yorkshire ( the setting for testing it in the real world.

Funding Notes:

The award covers UK resident PhD tuitions fees and a stipend (maintenance) at the standard UK research rate of £13,590 (tax free). EU applicants resident in the UK for at least 3 years are eligible for the award. EU applicants not resident will be eligible for PhD fees with no maintenance. International applicants are not eligible.


Applicants should have minimum of an upper-second-class Honours degree (2.1 or above) and preferably a Master in Computer Science. The project requires previous knowledge of 3D Graphics, and preferably data processing and/or transmission, data security.
