There is a growing interest in the use of virtual and mixed-reality environments for online teaching and learning. Immersive Education gives participants a sense of “being there” even when attending a class or training session in person isn’t possible, practical, or desirable, which in turn provides educators and students with the ability to connect and communicate in a way that greatly enhances the learning experience. Originally available only to university students, the next generation of Immersive Education is focused on a broad spectrum of academic and non-academic users (higher education, K-12, and corporate training).

iED Summits are official Immersive Education Initiative conferences organized specifically for educators, researchers, and administrators. iED Summits consist of presentations, panel discussions, break-out sessions and workshops that provide attendees with an in-depth overview of immersive learning platforms, technologies and cutting-edge research from around the world. iED Summits feature new and emerging virtual worlds, learning games, educational simulations, mixed/augmented reality, and related teaching tools, techniques, technologies, standards and best practices.

This summit will address core topics on the use of virtual and mixed-reality environments for online education and training applications. The scope will be fairly broad and will look at a range of innovative uses of virtual reality immersive environments. This could range from using and developing virtual environments through to practitioners with experience of teaching online and developing new approaches and pedagogies, including underpinning theories, human factors, pedagogy and design/evaluation strategies, case studies and more technical/scientific research topics. Submissions that have empirical results derived from virtual or mixed-reality immersive education test-beds are also encouraged.

This is the first summit organised by the newly formed European Chapter of the Immersive Education Initiative (http://europe.immersiveeducation.org), and builds on the success of previous iED summits held in Boston and London (http://mediagrid.org/summit/). Universidad Carlos III de Madrid will host the two-day iED Summit from 28th to 29th November 2011.

Paper and poster submissions

The summit will consist of both short/long paper presentation sessions. The submitted papers should be of no more than 6 pages (short paper) or 12 pages (long paper). The best papers of the summit will be given the opportunity to submit a revised version to special issues of two journals. One is the Journal of Universal Computer Science (JUCS, http://www.jucs.org) and the other one the International Journal on Knowledge and Learning (IJKL, http://www.inderscience.com/browse/index.php?journalCODE=ijkl).

Work in progress may be also presented by means of posters. The poster submission should consist of a paper of maximum 2 pages.

The format of the paper and poster submissions should follow the IOS guidelines (http://www.iospress.nl/authco/instruction_crc.html) and be submitted via the iED Europe submission EasyChair system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eied2011). The Programme Committee will review all papers through a non-blind review process. Note that at least one author for each accepted paper must register and present the paper at the summit.

Demonstration proposals

Proposals to present demonstrations of new technologies for Immersive Education are welcome. Demonstration proposals should clearly describe the motivation for the tool and how it will be demonstrated at the summit. Demonstration descriptions will not be published in the proceedings; therefore, demonstrations can include both previously published work and work that is not yet ready for publication. Submissions should be no longer than 3 pages in length using the IOS template and sent through the EasyChair system (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eied2011).
