The Fifth International Workshop on Symbiotic Interaction will take place on the 29th and 30th of September 2016 and will be hosted by the Human Inspired Technology Research center of the University of Padua (Italy).

OVERVIEW
The International Workshop on Symbiotic Interaction is the primary venue to present scientific works dealing with the symbiotic relationships between humans and computers and to discuss the nature and implications of such relationship, including ethics. The idea of symbiotic systems put forward in this workshop capitalizes on the computers’ ability to implicitly (even subliminally) detect the users’ goals, preferences or/and psycho‐physiological states and to modify its output accordingly. The workshop comes back to Padua this year after three successful editions in London, Helsinki and Berlin and extends its scope to qualitative research.
The emphasis is on user-‐driven research on symbiotic systems, adaptive systems, implicit input data, physiological computing and BCI, but also on understanding more deeply the nature of the interdependence and agency between computers and humans.
Topics can regard but are not limited to:
- Multimodal input for symbiotic systems
- Design and evaluation approaches: relevant dimensions for designing and evaluating a usable and satisfactory symbiotic system
- Context-aware and user-aware adaptive solutions
- Ethic issues and responsibilities (transparency, control, automaticity, profiling, agency, …)
- Symbiotic individual and collective behavior and structures
- Applications of symbiotic interaction (traffic, work and organizations, security, …)
- Transparent visualizations and feedback
- Symbiosis and persuasion
- Intelligent assistants using implicit data
- Recommender systems using implicit data
- Modeling users’ affective states
- Prediction of users’ goals and information relevance
- User models in collective symbiotic systems
- User’s perception of adaptive systems and intelligent interfaces: trust, blame, performance, facilitation
- Symbiosis in assistive technologies
PUBLICATIONS
The proceedings will be published by Springer, in the Lecture Notes on Computer Science series. Posters, demos and doctoral consortium abstracts will be published in an additional book with ISBN by a different publisher.
AWARDS
A best paper award will be granted to one of the works presented at the conference.
To one of the works presented at the Doctoral Consortium, a best DC award will be granted.

TYPES OF CONTRIBUTIONS
LONG AND SHORT PAPERS:
Contributions can be long (12 pages) or short papers (6 pages). The program committee will decide, based on the reviews, whether to consider the submitted papers for oral presentation or for poster/demo presentation. Papers accepted as oral presentations will be included in the Springer book of proceedings. Papers accepted as posters or demos and doctoral consortium abstracts will be published in adjunct proceedings with different ISBN number and publisher. All papers must present original, innovative, and forward-looking research and are to be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=symbiotic2016. All submission files must be anonymized in order to have a double blind review process. Authors info and acknowledgments will be inserted later on the camera ready versions of accepted papers. PhD students participating in the Doctoral Consortium (see below) can also submit their work as a long/short paper, if properly extended.
DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM:
The Doctoral Consortium (DC) is a special session of the conference where a limited number of PhD students in the early phases of their research can receive advice in a constructive and informal atmosphere. Students present and discuss their research with other PhD students and a panel of established researchers. Students interested in participating in the Doctoral Consortium should submit a 2‐page abstract in Springer LNCS format but without the typical sections of a paper submission; it is important to describe research questions, position with respect to the state of the art, research plans and methodology, ideas, and results achieved so far. The two-‐page limit does not include references. Accepted abstracts will be included in the adjunct conference proceedings. Candidates who have made some progress, but who are still in time in their research to make changes will be preferred. Among all doctoral projects presented in the consortium, one will be selected as Best DC paper.
PhD students participating in the DC can also submit their work as a long/short paper, if properly extended.
All submissions need to follow the Springer formatting guidelines.

REGISTRATION
Registration: 100€ (students: 50€) from the conference website, by September 15. Registration of one of the authors is required in order for the paper to be included in the proceedings.
On‐site registration will NOT be available.
