Research Associate in VR/AR Technology

As part of the recently funded European Media and Immersion Lab (EMIL), the Department of Computer Science are looking for a highly motivated individual to conduct research in the area of VR/AR. The project aims to design exciting new VR/AR systems, focusing on systems that involve physical activity such as VR exercise games (“exergames”), explore their effects on users, and develop new technology that makes it easier to create such systems.
This research work will include the following activities:
- Designing and developing novel VR/AR systems – the focus will be on systems that involve physical activity. The work will mainly involve developing the software for these systems, so good programming skills are required. Some systems may make use of novel hardware interfaces for interaction, so some experience with hardware is useful but not essential.
- Evaluating VR/AR systems – this includes developing a methodology for empirical studies, such as experimental design, tasks and set up, the use of sensors to collect physiological data, participant recruitment, data collection with participants and data analysis. Some experience with running user studies is essential. Experience with data analysis such as statistical testing is desirable.
- Leadership – this includes proactively driving projects forward by communicating with everyone involved, coordinating between different research group members and stakeholders, co-supervising research students, proactive engagement with end-users, representing the research group at events, and research group organisation tasks.
- Publication – this includes researching and summarising related work, describing the design of novel VR/AR systems and their evaluation, and critical analysis of contributions in the light of the existing literature. It also includes presentation of the work at conferences and in demonstrations. We have a track record of publishing at top-tier HCI publication venues such as CHI, so experience in publishing at venues such as CHI, UIST, IEEE VR, ISMAR or good HCI journals is highly desirable.
You will be associated with two research centres at the University of Bath: CAMERA (the Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications) and REVEAL (the REal and Virtual Environments Augmentation Lab). CAMERA has a world-class production standard motion-capture studio, which will be available for this project. Both centres are very successful in delivering internationally recognised research, making this position an excellent opportunity for an early career researcher to build up a strong track record of publications.
You will join a team of researchers, dedicated to creating the next generation of VR/AR experiences. As well as working within the team, you will collaborate with a number of industrial and academic partners to ensure that the solutions developed are relevant and that they will be adopted in the real-world.
