PHI IMMERSIVE RESIDENCY is an eight-week residency with PHI Studio in Montreal, Canada focused on the conceptualization stage of a proposed project. Selected artist(s) will work alongside PHI Studio experts to develop, plan, and prototype an interactive artwork or immersive experience. The selected project will receive personalized support, space, and select resources to develop and elaborate their concept within a broader context and create a prototype to prepare the project for eventual production and financial investment.

PROGRAM DETAILS

Positioned at the intersection of art and technology, PHI Studio develops and presents collective experiences centred around audience interactivity. PHI IMMERSIVE RESIDENCY is an annual residency program that offers the opportunity to conceptualize and prototype a new immersive or interactive artwork. This residency is part of PHI’s continued effort to contribute to the development of future generations of immersive storytellers.

Local and international artists or small production companies with established or emerging careers are encouraged to apply. Through PHI IMMERSIVE RESIDENCY, PHI aims to invest in incredible artists with incredible ideas and contribute to the growing global field of new media art and experiences.

MANDATE

What kind of projects are we looking for?

Artists are asked to submit a proposal for artwork including but not limited to:

  • Interactive or new media;
  • Immersivity;
  • Virtual Reality;
  • Augmented Reality;
  • Sound and/or Generative Music or Audio.

We are looking for experimental projects with a strong storyline and narratives, and technologically driven.

Devoted to the conceptualization stage of the project, selected artists participating in PHI IMMERSIVE RESIDENCY will receive:

  • Personalized support (workshops, one-on-one consultations) from the PHI Studio team over the eight-week residency period:

Technical support;
Production support;
Conceptual and creative support;
Design and scenography support;
Programming and other specialty support.

  • Access to the following PHI Studio facilities: PHI’s sound recording and editing studio and sound engineer; access to PHI’s offices and administrative spaces.
  • Access to PHI’s vast network of collaborators;
  • Production of a short video profile on each artist for promotional purposes, to be shared across PHI networks.

The artist(s) will retain the Intellectual Property of their project, but PHI will ask for the first option for co-production, distribution, or exhibition.

APPLICATIONS

Submit your application by November 1, 2021, at 11:59 p.m. by completing this Application Form.

Applicants will be asked to supply:

  1. Contact Information;
  2. Artist/Collective CV (3 pages maximum);
  3. An artistic deck including (8 pages max):
    1. A summary note presenting the main artistic elements of the project: concept, synopsis, an interactive device in line with the chosen format and the target audience(s);
    2. A statement of intent describing the artistic choices and creative challenges specific to the chosen format;
    3. Literary and/or graphic elements presenting the main characteristics of the project: literary treatment, the visual universe, elements of scriptwriting illustrating the principles of immersive or interactive narration;
    4. A description of expected needs for PHI support in conceptualizing and prototyping your artwork.
  4. Documentation of previous work (up to five maximum; web links to existing images, video, builds, or other documentation are accepted).

Applications can be completed in French or English. Incomplete applications or applications that do not meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be contacted on November 17, 2021, and will be publicly announced in early December, 2021.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

PHI IMMERSIVE RESIDENCY is a highly competitive program aimed at individual artists and/or small production companies (fewer than five employees) who have an innovative idea for a first-of-its-kind immersive or interactive experience, and the drive to realize it. Artists or collectives with committed professional practices, from all multidisciplinary backgrounds, are invited to apply.

We are looking for artists or collectives who are elaborating a great idea but require accompaniment to facilitate the creative development, the guidance through the production stages, who need support developing a prototype, and/or who require technological expertise to see their project into fruition.

International applicants are eligible to apply but must relocate to Montreal, Canada, for the duration of the 8-week residency (January – February 2022). Lodging and travel are not provided as part of the residency. International artists and collectives are responsible for securing their work permits and other travel documentation if applicable. Conditions offered for single artists remain the same for groups and collectives.

One project will be selected.

SELECTIONPROCESS

The selection will be undertaken by a committee composed of PHI staff and invited external professionals who reflect a diverse set of expertise and perspectives.

Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:

  • The originality of the project and narrative, its contribution to the diversity of creation, its conceptual and technical rigour and innovation (45%);
  • Feasibility of the project from conceptualizing to prototyping to production stages and the technical and budgetary practicality of the proposed project (30%);
  • Quality of past work and overall application (25%).

PHI will be offering one 45-minutes online Q+A session (30 minutes to respond to questions that had been sent in prior via email, and 15 minutes at the end for attendees) to offer further guidance on the residency and the preparation of your application.
