This will be a half-day tutorial.
TUTORIAL OVERVIEW:
Designing multisensory experiences is fascinating academics and practitioners alike. Recent advances in interactive systems and sensory devices also increasingly captures the attention of artists, museum curators, and creative industries, who aim to explore the opportunities of new and emerging technologies to create novel and unexpected experiences. The main objective of this tutorial is to increase the ISS communities’ awareness of design spaces beyond audio-visual and tactile interactions. In particular, we will provide an overview on olfactory design spaces and opportunities building on our expertise and experience working on multisensory design projects including the Tate Sensorium, Famous Deaths, Multisensory VR experiences.
TUTORIAL OBJECTIVES:
The key objectives of this tutorial are to inspire and engage researchers, designers, and practitioners (in industry and academia) with the following activities:
- Overview on the state-of-the art activities in multisensory experience and interaction design, emphasizing the opportunities beyond audio-vision: touch, smell and taste
- Presentation of three use cases (Tate Sensorium, Famous Deaths, Multisensory VR experiences)
- Hands-on-experiences of multisensory experiences

Marianna Obrist is a Reader at the School of Engineering and Informatics at the University of Sussex, UK. Marianna is leading the Sussex Computer Human Interaction Lab (SCHI ‘sky’ Lab), a research group dedicated to the investigation of multisensory experiences. The interdisciplinary SCHI Lab team explores tactile, gustatory, and olfactory experiences as novel interaction modalities. This research is mainly supported by a five-year grant from the European Research Council. Before joining Sussex, Marianna was a Marie Curie Fellow at Newcastle University and prior to this an Assistant Professor for HCI. See more info: http://www.multi-sensory.info
Grace Boyle is the founder and director of The Feelies, the first public multisensory cinema based around virtual reality. Blending storytelling, technology, sensory science and theatre, The Feelies brings together perfumers, software developers, psychologists, sound artists, and experience and production designers to create stories that speak to all of an audience’s senses. They focus on stories of environmental or social importance, and are currently launching a joint project with Greenpeace to tell the full sensory story of an Indigenous People of the Brazilian Amazon whose land and way of life is under threat from industrialisation.
Marcel van Brakel is artistic director of cross media group Polymorf. He works as independent media designer, play writer, librettist and film and theatre director. Marcel was co- founder of film collective FlimFilm and worked as a theatre director at Het Witte Vuur. Van Brakel is also a lecturer Multimedia Design, 3D Design and Performativity the Department of Communication Media Design at the Avans University of Applied Science in Breda.
Frederik Duerinck is a filmmaker and producer located in Breda. For many years Frederik has produced and directed a great amount of documentaries, Corporate films, e-learning, and online healthcare- applications. Since 2004 Frederik teaches part time at Department of Communication Media Design at the Avans University of Applied Science in Breda as lecturer film- multimedia- design and project supervisor. He is also co-founder of the CMD Netlab.
