Five tenure-track posts of professor/associate professor in the New Social Research (NSR) programme at the University of Tampere (Finland) for the fixed term of five years

The University of Tampere is a lively research environment with a staff of 2.200 and 15.000 students and with a strong emphasis on the study of topical societal phenomena.
The University of Tampere has established a multidisciplinary New Social Research (NSR) programme in order to strengthen its profile in social research.
The NSR programme concentrates on the following themes:
- governing complexity
- transformation of agency and empowerment
- changing work
- future of well-being
- new forms of communication, information and interaction
Research on these themes is carried out across disciplinary and faculty boundaries, and in cooperation with decision-makers and research participants both nationally and internationally. More information on the NSR is available at the programme website, http://www.uta.fi/nsr/.
The New Social Research (NSR) programme is announcing the vacancy of five tenure track professors/associate professors for the fixed term of five years as of 1 December 2016 or as agreed.
Another five positions for NSR will be opened in early 2017.
The tasks of the professor/associate professor (tenure track) include, among other things, the following:
- conduct research in alignment with the New Social Research (NSR) Programme
- the development of the programme’s research profile in cooperation with the other scholars
- active seeking of external research funding
- cooperation with the University’s faculties, researchers at the Institute for Advanced Social Research (IASR), and other partners
- participation in national and international research groups and networks
In addition, the professor’s/associate professor’s tasks in the University’s faculties include, for example: instruction, supervision of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations developing research and teaching in the faculty participation in the faculty’s working groups.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POST OF PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK)
A person appointed to the post of a professor/associate professor is expected to have earned his/her doctoral degree in a field relevant to the research programme and to have high-level scientific expertise, a proven track record of international scientific cooperation, and the ability to offer advanced research-based instruction and supervision.
When the merits of the applicant are assessed, the following aspects will also be taken into account:
- the alignment of the applicant’s research with one or more themes in the NSR programme
- the suitability of the applicant’s research proposal in view of the NSR themes and the multidisciplinary research environment
- experience in leading a research group
- a history of successful applications for external research funding
- merits related to education on the doctoral level
- studies in university pedagogy or other pedagogical merits and experience in teaching
THE BASIS FOR SALARY AND THE PRELIMINARY JOB REQUIREMENT LEVEL
The salary is based on the job requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the University Salary System. In addition to the requirement level component, the successful applicant will be paid a personal work performance component. At the start of employment, the monthly salary of an associate professor will range between EUR 5.000 – 5.600 and that of a professor between EUR 5.700 – 6.400.
THE TRIAL PERIOD AND THE TENURE TRACK
There will be a trial period of four months in the posts.
The positions will be filled as tenure track posts. Applicants must indicate whether they apply on the associate professor’s or professor’s level. The steering group will make decisions on starting the external evaluation process of the appointed candidates at least one year before the end of the fixed term.

The following documents are to be enclosed with the application:
- A CV without a list of publications (four pages at the most)
- A list of publications compiled according to the Academy of Finland guidelines, in which the applicant should indicate ten of the most important publications
- A letter of application, maximum two pages, in which the applicant should write:
– the reasons why he/she is applying for the post
-the most significant merits and experience for the applied post
- A research outline, maximum five pages, detailing how the applicant’s research is related to the NSR programme and strengthens it 5. the names and contact details of two persons who can recommend the applicant for the post
