Call: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context (at CHI 2011)

CFP: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context
A workshop at CHI 2011
May 8, 2011, Vancouver BC, Canada

Recent studies in Human-Computer Interaction have turned to examining computing in non-Western contexts, increasingly recognizing that technologies and activities of their participants are not bounded by single geographies, cultures, or borders. In our interactions with everyday technologies, we are increasingly tied to people and machines in other countries, cultures and networks. Such activities require us to consider technologies not just in national, but also in a transnational context. That is, humans, computers and interactions not limited to single countries or cultures, but forming communities across spaces, managing boundary-crossings, and forming hybrid practices.

This workshop will bring together researchers and designers across academia and industry to address the effects, implications, and design opportunities for individuals and communities who engage in transnational technological practices.… read more. “Call: TRANSNATIONAL HCI: Humans, Computers and Interactions in Transnational Context (at CHI 2011)”

Emotion Tech Developer Shares Dreams of Electric Sheep

On the tech frontier, boundaries between man and machine fade

By Joshua Philipp

Few may remember the 1982 film, “Firefox” about the Soviet fighter jet controlled by the pilot’s mind. The film, starring Clint Eastwood, set out on a premise that technology using the mind as its commander would be a weapon so dangerous that “it would change the structure of our world.”

Or, as software developer Robert Oschler has discovered, you can use it to watch YouTube.

Oschler is a pioneer on an emerging frontier—a place where the boundaries between man and machine are less defined, and where technological boundaries fade.… read more. “Emotion tech developer uses EEG to control computers”

Call: Symposium on Adapted and Personalised Interaction at AISB 2011

Call for Papers: Symposium on Adapted and Personalised Interaction at AISB 2011
Thursday, 7th April, 2011

This symposium is aimed to bring together all strands of research in the intersection of AI and human-computer interaction (HCI) to look specifically at developing interactive systems that adapt to the needs of individual users. The scope of the symposium is deliberately broad and can cover anything from systems that can adapt to make themselves more accessible to disabled users, through systems designed to manage the emotional responses of users, to games that adapt themselves to provide a more enjoyable playing experience.… read more. “Call: Symposium on Adapted and Personalised Interaction at AISB 2011”

Robots for our old age

[From MIT’s Technology Review Editors blog]

Robots for Our Old Age

iRobot’s CEO says robots will help the elderly and infirm live independently, for longer.

Kristina Grifantini 11/24/2010

Colin Angle, CEO of iRobot, gave a keynote talk last month at the 2010 Connected Health Symposium in Boston. He didn’t say what the company is working on in its new healthcare robots business unit, but he predicted robots will have a crucial role to play in the future of healthcare. Angle said that assistive robots will enable old or sick people to live independently for longer.… read more. “Robots for our old age”

Call: 9th Biennial Conference on Environmental Psychology

The 9th Biennial Conference on Environmental Psychology
September 26-28, 2011
Eindhoven, the Netherlands
http://www.envpsych2011.eu

The 9th biennial conference on Environmental Psychology aims to bring together people interested in the field of environmental psychology to meet, share experiences, present research, and discuss ideas with regard to the state of the art in environment and behavior research.

Key themes of the conference include, but are not limited to, the built and natural environment, conservation behavior and sustainability, environmental perception and decision making, environmental risks and stress, methods and theories in environment-behavior research, proxemics, restoration and health. We encourage, in particular, theoretical and empirical contributions addressing this year’s conference theme Environment 2.0.

Environment 2.0. The environments we live and work in are becoming increasingly technological. This is reflected in this year’s special conference theme Environment2.0. We invite participants to reflect on environmental psychology’s status with regard to technological innovations.… read more. “Call: 9th Biennial Conference on Environmental Psychology”

Microsoft develops shape-shifting touchscreen

[From New Scientist]

Microsoft develops shape-shifting touchscreen

Updated 13:16 29 November 2010 by Paul Marks

Microsoft this week filed a patent application covering a novel way to construct a “tactile” touchscreen – a display that uses technical tricks to convince users they are actually touching the ridges, bumps and textures of a displayed image.

Whereas previous screens produced only an illusion of texture, Microsoft proposes producing a real texture, using pixel-sized shape-memory plastic cells that can be ordered to protrude from the surface on command.… read more. “Microsoft develops shape-shifting touchscreen”

Call: CHI 2011 Workshop – Gamification: Using Game Design Elements in Non-Gaming Contexts

Call For Participation

CHI 2011 Workshop
Gamification: Using Game Design Elements in Non-Gaming Contexts

http://bit.ly/grn-chi2011

“Gamification” is an informal umbrella term for the use of video game elements in non-game systems to improve user experience (UX) and user engagement. The recent introduction of ‘gamified’ applications such as Foursquare to large end-user audiences promises new lines of inquiry and rich data sources for the many endeavors in human-computer interaction (HCI) that have explored game-related heuristics, design patterns and dynamics of motivating, positive user experiences – endeavors as various as persuasive technology, funology, incentive centered design, the social psychology of online communities, motivational affordances, or game UX.

The goal of this one-day workshop at CHI 2011 is to bring together HCI researchers and practitioners from these diverse fields to take the next step forward by building a shared picture of the current state of approaches and findings pertinent to gamification, and to identify synergies, key opportunities and questions for future research.… read more. “Call: CHI 2011 Workshop – Gamification: Using Game Design Elements in Non-Gaming Contexts”
