HCIed 2010 “Learning to Design and Learning through Design”

HCIEd is the annual international workshop of the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) education community. HCIEd 2010 will be organized by the Department of Industrial Design, at the Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands, and will be co-sponsored by IFIP WG 13.1 (Education in HCI and HCI Curriculum) and the BCS Interaction SG.
In keeping with the design tradition of the TU/e, the theme for HCIEd 2010 will be ‘Learning to Design and Learning through Design’
HCIEd 2010 is a friendly, lively conference that aims to be a venue for the exchange of new ideas, techniques, and experiences regarding education in the multi-disciplinary field of human computer interaction and interaction design education. Initially held as a bi-annual workshop and run by the British Computer Society Interaction Special Group (previously the BCS HCI Specialist Group). HCIEd has taken on an international flavour in recent years and has developed into an annual conference series that is now co-sponsored by the BCS and IFIP. The conference is held annually and every two years it goes outside the UK with the express intention to broaden its scope and cross national trends and boundaries.
*** THEME OF HCIed 2010
The theme of this year’s event is Learning to Design and Learning through Design. We invite cordially colleagues from all disciplines contributing to human-computer interaction education to participate actively in the conference. The format of the event has traditionally been very interactive and we aim to continue this tradition this year.
*** TOPICS
Contributions that align with the conference theme of Learning to Design and Learning through Design are especially welcomed; contributions that address the following topics are invited:
– Curricula for human computer interaction and interaction design education
– Novel topics and trends in HCI and Interaction Design education
– How to evaluate design work for educational purposes?
– Continuing education of HCI professionals and designers
– Multi-disciplinary issues in Human-Computer Interaction education
– Course reviews
– Educational resources in HCI
– Lessons learnt in the trenches: experiences in HCI education
– Learning from practice: exposing students to real world perspectives
– Design Process
– Teaching Creativity in Design

*** SUBMISSION CATEGORIES
To ensure active participation of all attendees, the following presentation and participation formats are invited:
a) Papers for Oral Presentation Researchers, educators, practitioners are invited to submit papers addressing the themes of the conference as they are listed above. Submission should be anonymous and present original work not published elsewhere. Paper submissions should be between 6-10 pages maximum following the Springer LNCS format.
b) Teachable moments “Teachable moments” is a special category in which educators can describe in first person practical experiences and practical tips. Teachable moments should be in up to 4 pages following the Springer LNCS format. Contributions in this category will be presented to the audience and reactions from a panel of HCI educators will be invited.
c) Educational resources for HCI and Interaction Design Education In this category Design and HCI educators are encouraged to present resources they find useful in education: case studies offered to students, exercises, in-class activities, assignments, and approaches for providing feedback for a multi-disciplinary topic. Educational material will be reviewed as to its originality and educational value, but also with respect to how the presentation allows other educators to use the description as a teaching resource. Paper submissions in this category should be between 4-10 pages; the length requirement is very flexible to allow diverse contributions. Educational material can be presented in poster format, video or live demonstration fashion in special sessions. d) Walk in poster and attendance Prospective participants, who do not wish to submit a paper in the above categories, are welcome to participate actively in the event through: poster presentations and participating in discussion sessions. Submission of a 1-2 page abstract in Springer LNCS style is encouraged but optional. Abstracts should be original text not published elsewhere.
*** CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
Papers in all categories accepted for the conference will be printed in a conference proceedings volume that will be distributed to conference participants. A selection of the best and most interesting contributions will be included in a volume of the Springer IFIP series, entitled: HCI Education: Architecting the Future.
