Special Issue of Itinerari: Transformations of the Human in the Digital Transition
Posted to the Philos-L e-list on December 23, 2024
Deadline for submission of abstracts: January 30, 2025
The upcoming issue of Itinerari is dedicated to examining the profound transformation of humanity and its values in the context of the ongoing digital transition. The rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence (AI) calls for a reevaluation of foundational normative concepts, enabling us to rethink what “human-centeredness” means in today’s world. By investigating both the benefits and critical challenges of this digital paradigm shift, the issue seeks to explore the underlying structures driving these changes, focusing on the following themes:
SECTION 1: Resemanticization of Traditional Values and New Normative Paradigms
This section invites contributions that examine how AI challenges our understanding of traditional values and compels the formulation of new ethical perspectives. Papers may explore:
- The gaps in existing normative theories that hinder the rethinking of appropriate paradigms.
- The intersection of normative and descriptive analysis to create innovative ethical frameworks that address human-centered and alternative perspectives in the digital age.
SECTION 2: Autonomy, Human-Computer Interaction, and the Ethics of AI
Submissions should delve into the ethical dilemmas arising from human-computer interaction, focusing on pluralistic theories of autonomy. Topics include:
- The merits and limitations of autonomy theories, from Kantian perspectives to feminist critiques.
- The relevance of ontological and metaphysical debates to contemporary AI ethics.
- How autonomy is enhanced or diminished by digital technologies, and the implications for personal responsibility, social governance, democratic decision-making, and social equity.
SECTION 3: Empathy and Vulnerability as Paradigms to Rethink Humanity
This section explores the evolving relationships between humans and non-human entities (e.g., AI agents, virtual assistants) through the lenses of empathy and vulnerability. Topics include:
- The impact of digital technologies on our sense of self and subjectivity.
- How these concepts can be redefined to foster a deeper understanding of humanity in the digital transition.
- The ethical and philosophical implications of reshaping human and non-human interactions.
