Call for Participation

Symposium on Humanistic AI
June 19, 2024
In-person: University of Gothenburg (Humanisten, Renströmsgatan 6, Gothenburg, Sweden)
Online: On Zoom
https://dh.gu.se/humanisticai

The Gothenburg Research Infrastructure in Digital Humanities (GRIDH), University of Gothenburg, and The Swedish School of Library and Information Science (SSLIS), University of Borås, are delighted to invite you all to attend the symposium on ‘Humanistic AI’ to be held as a hybrid event at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, June 19. The symposium is co-sponsored by the national research infrastructures Huminfra, Swe-Clarin, and InfraVis.

The purpose of this symposium is to conduct a first inventory of the state of the art of what at the recent Huminfra conference was tentatively referred to as ‘Humanistic AI’ – the emerging field of various humanities practices that use, develop, and interrogate AI (Fridlund et al. 2024) — primarily in Sweden but also in neighboring countries. We wish to create a forum for researchers and practitioners within the humanities to present and discuss experiences and findings related to using and/or developing AI tools within or for humanities research and cultural heritage practice. The symposium likewise aspires to set the stage for critical engagement with the epistemic, ethical, cultural, and societal dimensions of AI technology as it affects practices within the humanities.

Keynote lecture:
Dr. Lev Manovich, Presidential Professor of Computer Science at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center and the Director of the Cultural Analytics Lab.
Compression <-> Generation: Realism, Modernism, and Generative AI
