The Journalism Program of the School of Communication and Information, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai’i at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawai’i) invites applicants for the position of Associate or Full Professor.  This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure track position to begin August 1, 2024, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

The Opportunity:

The University of Hawai’i at Manoa invites applications for this position to play a significant role in building our rapidly growing Journalism major. We are seeking a senior faculty member with significant potential to enhance the national and international reputation of our Journalism program via cutting-edge research, external funding, and leadership. A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and alumni is necessary for this position.

The ideal candidate for this position is a specialist in emerging media, with expertise in how advancements in Artificial Intelligence(s) will reshape the field. This position will help our students prepare for an industry that will increasingly leverage computational resources to spread news and battle misinformation and disinformation. The candidate is expected to contribute significantly to news literacy education for our majors and help build news literacy education to become a core curriculum university-wide. In addition to AI, we will consider specialty in intersections inherent with emerging media technologies of all types including, but not limited to; social media, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Extended Reality (XR) and Mixed Reality (MR), and digital storytelling platforms such as ArcGIS.

The UH Manoa Journalism program is the only one in the state, and one of only a few in all of Oceania, to offer a bachelor’s degree explicitly in “Journalism.” It is growing fast, earning unprecedented success with its students, and aiming to seek accreditation.

Duties and Responsibilities – Associate Professor (I-4):

  1. Conduct impactful research aligned with the standards at the University;
  2. Teach classes both at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  3. Advise and mentor students;
  4. Engage in the academic community through providing service to the Program, School, College, University, and to the discipline of Journalism;
  5. Serve as program/department chair when selected;
  6. Lead programmatic/departmental committees aimed at improving our program, our school, and Journalism in the state;
  7. Other duties as assigned by the School Chair.

Duties and Responsibilities – Professor (I-5):

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of the Associate Professor rank,

  1. Assume a role of professional leadership at the university level and in the scholarly discipline.

Minimum Qualifications – Associate Professor (I-4):

  1. Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, or a closely related field, or a terminal degree in a Journalism-adjacent field;
  1. Proven record of impactful publishing in scholarly contexts;
  1. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity;
  2. Evidence of proficiency in teaching courses at the university level in emerging media, social media, and/or about other types of innovative approaches to Journalism;
  3. Continued evidence of participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization, or in other appropriate job-related service activities;
  4. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate;
  5. Ability to serve as a role model for students and junior colleagues;
  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and/or administration.

Minimum Qualifications – Professor (I-5):

  1. Ph.D. in Journalism, Communication, or a closely related field, or a terminal degree in a Journalism-adjacent field;
  2. A minimum of four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of associate professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity;
  3. Evidence of excellence in teaching courses at the university level in emerging media, social media, and/or about other types of innovative approaches to Journalism;
  4. Research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field;
  5. Demonstrated continuing participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization, or in an appropriate professional society or organization, or in other appropriate job-related service activities;
  6. Demonstrated ability to plan and organize assigned activities, including the supervision of work of assistants when appropriate;
  7. Ability to undertake a variety of assignments within the University;
  8. Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the department and scholarly discipline;
  9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff and/or administration.

Desirable Qualifications – Associate Professor (I-4):

  1. Experience teaching both in-person and online, with evidence of impact and success in both contexts.
  1. Experience teaching classes that are both technical (i.e., building skills in writing, reporting, media production, etc.) and conceptual (i.e., about news literacy, Journalism history, ethics, law, etc.).
  1. Working experience in a professional newsroom, or an equivalent media-production environment, as evidence of professional production practices.
  1. Evidence of a teaching agenda that supports and focuses upon emerging media, especially at intersections of news literacy, professional practices, and technologies useful for journalists, including Artificial Intelligence(s), social media, and/or production software.
  1. Evidence of a research agenda that shows a clear and upward trajectory toward creating impactful studies in our field.
  1. Evidence of significant and impactful academic publishing.
  2. Evidence of excellence in teaching practices, classroom innovation, and student engagement.
  3. Evidence of collegial and impactful university service.

Desirable Qualifications – Professor (I-5):

In addition to the desirable qualifications of the Associate Professor rank:

  1. Evidence of scholarly leadership, nationally and internationally.
  2. Evidence of pedagogical leadership, bringing innovations and excitement to classrooms at a systemic level.
  3. Evidence of program-building initiatives, demonstrating an ability to significantly contribute to a growing program, on the way up.
