On-Location provides professional development with a series of hands-on training sessions, and an opportunity to promote academic scholarship through research and creative sessions and competitions. This year’s conference will include special sessions on virtual reality, augmented reality, 360° video, including panels, speakers, and demonstrations.

RESEARCH:

BEA’s On-Location conference accepts the following full paper and research-in-progress submissions, and the following types of research:

General research related to any area of media or media education, with emphasis in subjects that align with BEA interest divisions

Special research call for virtual reality, augmented reality, or 360° or immersive technology. Evolutions in technology are transforming storytelling, changing the ways we experience the world. This call focuses specifically on immersive technologies, where the user enters a simulated world.

Submission Process:

  • Blind Review… Please do NOT include a cover page with author and contact information and remove ALL author information from internal pages. Judges need to blindly review your papers. Papers are linked to your profile on the backend.
  • Editing Abilities… You can edit and/or re-submit papers up until the deadline.
  • Length & Style… The paper is not to exceed 30 double-spaced pages, including references & tables, and use of APA style or a style suited to the discipline is expected.

Completed research papers and research-in-progress must be submitted electronically.

PANELS:

Panel proposals related to any area of media or media education will be accepted for the 2023 conference.

Please be sure to list all panel participants, school/company as well as their roles.

Submissions relating to VR, AR, and 360° video are especially encouraged!

Panel proposals must be submitted electronically.

CREATIVE WORKS:

The On-Location Creative Works Competition provides an opportunity for full-time faculty and students at colleges and universities to showcase their creative scholarship.  Faculty work must have been completed in the past two years, and student work completed during the past year.  Faculty submissions are peer reviewed and student submissions are reviewed by a mix of industry professionals and faculty.

Audio | Documentary | Film & Video | Interactive Multimedia | News | Sports | VR, AR, and 360° Video | Open*

*Open is for entries that do not fit in one of the other categories.

Note: On-Location does not offer a Scriptwriting Competition as part of the Creative Works Competition.

  • The Audio Competition allows faculty and students to showcase audio programming for radio and web/digital. Entries can include, but are not limited to, the following types of submissions: air personality, comedy or drama, sports, educational program, PSA, promo, or commercial, or specialty program.
  • The Documentary Competition showcases both short-form and long-form video documentaries produced by faculty and students.
  • The Film & Video Competition provides an opportunity for faculty and students to showcase their video production work. Entries can include, but are not limited to, the following types of submissions: commercial or PSA, educational or Instructional, narrative, and long form promotional.
  • The Interactive Multimedia Competition recognizes excellence in content creation that demonstrates creativity and innovation in interactive media and emerging technology. “Interactive” refers to content that involves active participation by the intended audience, allowing the user to have some control over the engagement experience. Examples may include but are not limited to websites, kiosks, mobile apps, fixed media, or other projects.
  • The News Competition awards outstanding work to faculty and student produced television and radio news reporting. Entries can include, but are not limited to, the following types of submissions: television feature and hard news reporting, television newscasts, television news anchor or weathercaster, and television news magazine.
  • The Sports Competition recognizes outstanding work for faculty and student television and video productions. Entries can include, but are not limited to, the following types of submissions: television sports story/feature, television sports news/magazine program, television sports event production.
  • The VR, AR, and 360° Video Competition provides an opportunity to showcase creative work in all areas of Extended Reality (XR) technology. Entries can include commercial, educational, documentary, demonstrations, or entertainment.

The creative works competition is open to faculty and students who completed their entry while employed or enrolled full-time at a college or university. You do not need to be a BEA member to enter. Faculty winners are expected to attend the conference.

The creative competition chair may create additional categories/sub categories for each competition if the type and number of entries are sufficient to make additional categories viable.
