The main goal of our conference is to provide a space for transdisciplinary discussions of various approaches to description and exploration of sonic environments. Such discussions have already been started decades ago in the area of acoustic ecology and sound studies and have developed into the vast and rich field of contemporary sonic research. We hope for an open and intellectually rewarding meeting that will allow for analyses of the complex composition and varied phenomenologies of interrelated sonic environments from multiple cooperating disciplinary perspectives. The conference seeks to explore the crossroads of biological, natural, social, cultural, political, and personal layers of our lived sonic environments that we are part of and that we at the same time create in our active shaping of the world.

Within this framework, we intend to address among other topics:

  • Methodologies of sonic research.
  • Concepts of soundscape and sonic environment.
  • Sonic environments and environmental challenges.
  • Connections of ecological psychology and sound studies.
  • Soundscapes and environmental crisis.
  • More than human – interspecies sonic relations.
  • Sonicity of natural bodies, embodiments of sounds.
  • Rhythm and rhythmicity of sonic environments.
  • Music and musical composition of sonic environments.
  • Composition of sonic environments in films and digital games
  • Politics of sonic environment.
  • Artistic research of sonic environments.
  • Media and mediation in sonic research.
  • Phenomenological description and exploration of sonic environments.
  • Sonic phenomenology: applications of phenomenology to auditory experience, as well as possibilities to redefine phenomenological methods on sonic basis.
  • Multisensory approach to sonic environments.
  • Spatial and acoustic turns in philosophy.

We welcome presentation proposals related not only to above mentioned topics, but also reflections regarding relations between sound-studies and philosophy (phenomenology) broadly understood. Independent scholars welcomed.

Please, send a short abstract of a 20 min talk (200 words approx., incl. your name and affiliation) until May 25th. Use this e-mail address: nitsche@flu.cas.cz; add “Thinking Sonic Environments” to the subject-line. Notifications of acceptance will be sent until June 5th.

There will be either none or a very small conference fee (€15, paid on site) for coffee-breaks.
