The Department of Communication and Cognition in the Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences is looking for an enthusiastic new colleague as an Assistant Professor in Human-Computer Interaction.
The successful candidates are expected to initiate and conduct research in the Tilburg Center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC). Researchers in TiCC explore cognitive and social aspects of human communication through a multidisciplinary approach, combining careful experimentation with survey methods, corpus analyses and computational modelling. Core research domains include (in alphabetical order) communication and technology, cross-cultural communication, information visualization, language production, new media design, social media research, strategic communication and non-verbal communication. Candidates are expected to develop new lines of research fitting within TiCC on topics including but not limited to creativity and design, design research, eHealth/mHealth, games and storytelling, human-robot interaction, inclusive design, interactive data visualisation, participatory design, persuasive technology, social media design/use, or virtual reality.
Moreover, the successful candidates contribute to one of the leading programs in the Netherlands in Communication and Information Sciences (CIS, bachelor and master), consisting of three tracks: Business Communication and Digital Media (BDM), Communication and Cognition (CC), and New Media Design (NMD). Annually, the CIS program attracts approximately 130 new bachelor students, 350 new premaster students, and 300 new master students. The successful candidate will contribute in particular to courses in the New Media Design track, such as User Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human-centered Design, and/or Rapid Prototyping.
In the recently opened Media Design Lab (part of the DCC labs), researchers, designers, instructors, and students can conduct research and teach in a creative and innovative environment. With a creative space, a living room lab, a virtual reality lab and several smaller and larger observation rooms, the Media Design Lab facilitates a wide range of research and design activities The lab is equipped with state-of-the-art tools, such as a 3D printer, several robots (NAO), hardware for gaming research, apparatus to measure psychophysiological measurements, fEMG, eye-tracking, etcetera.
The successful candidate has:
- a PhD in a relevant discipline;
- published in international journals or proceedings,
- excellent methodological skills,
- the intention and ability to write research grants,
- acquired (or is willing to acquire) the University Teaching Qualification, and
- the ability to communicate in English fluently and is able (or willing to learn) to communicate in Dutch.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
The position will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor (“universitair docent”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3807,- up to (maximally) € 5922,– gross per month. This is a structural position: you will be offered a contract of 18 months, which will become permanent after a positive evaluation.
Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment, such as a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% (annually), an options model and reimbursement of moving expenses. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities and Digital Sciences will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The collective labor agreement of the Dutch Universities applies.

The School of Humanities and Digital Sciences consists of four departments: Communication and Cognition, Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence, Culture Studies and Philosophy; several research institutes and a faculty office.
