Call: ACM SAP 2021: ACM Symposium on Applied Perception

Call for Papers

ACM Symposium on Applied Perception
16-17 September, 2021
Rennes (France) at the Inria Rennes and remotely [see note below]
http://sap.acm.org/2021/

Deadline for abstract submission: May 25th
Deadline for paper submission: May 27th

NOTE: As of now, ACM SAP 2021 is planned to be held as a hybrid conference both in Rennes (France) and virtually on the 16th and 17th of September, 2021. Although we encourage in-person attendance, the organizers plan to have online streaming and interaction options for virtual attendance for both attendees and speakers. More details will be provided as the situation evolves.

The ACM Symposium on Applied Perception (ACM SAP) provides an intimate forum for researchers who combine knowledge, methods, and insights from perception research and computer science disciplines. This includes such disciplines as cognitive psychology, perceptual psychology, psychophysics, behavior-analysis, and neuroscience on the perceptual side and computer graphics, computer vision, visualization, virtual reality and human-computer interfaces on the visual computing side.

The interdisciplinary focus of this conference acknowledges that the various scientific disciplines in perception research and computer science research use different but complementary methods to address fundamentally similar questions. As such, combinations of knowledge, methods, and/or insights from the different fields can help to advance all of the applied perception fields.

SUBMISSION. Submission should be sent using the link https://easychair.org/my/conference?conf=sap2021. We invite submissions of original work in all areas of applied perception, including all sensory modalities (vision, haptics, acoustics, proprioception, etc.). We welcome short and long papers submissions respectively up to 4 and 8 pages (not including references or appendices). The focus of the work can be either perceptual or computational, but each submission must include elements of both perception and computing. Research that is not accepted as a paper will automatically be considered for the poster session. Authors will have the option to decline to have their work be considered as a poster. Detailed submission and review guidelines are available on the conference website in the Information for Authors section.

INVITED ACM TAP JOURNAL PUBLICATION. Under an agreement with the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception (TAP) and the ACM Publications Board, the strongest accepted papers will be offered publication as full papers in the ACM journal TAP (instead of appearing in the proceedings). Authors of such special issue papers must agree to present the paper at ACM SAP. As has always been the case, authors of regular ACM SAP papers can still submit to TAP regular issues with appropriate additions. Papers that have been recommended for acceptance in the ACM TAP journal will undergo a second review cycle, during which the authors will revise the paper to address reviewer concerns.

PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINES

Each deadline is 5PM PARIS TIME on the stated day, no matter where the submitter is located.

Papers recommended for TAP additional deadlines:

  • July 30th: Second round reviews sent to TAP authors
  • August 9th: Final camera-ready due for papers selected for the TAP Special Issue

Each deadline is 5PM PARIS TIME on the stated day, no matter where the submitter is located.

TOPICS OF INTEREST

SAP welcomes submissions related to all topics relevant to both perception and computer science such as:

Application of perceptual research to any area of computer science, including but not limited to:

  • modeling, rendering, animation;
  • virtual environments, characters, avatars;
  • processing information from artificial sensors;
  • representation of data, communication of data, interaction with data.

Applications of computer science to any area of perception, including but not limited to:

  • modeling natural perceptual systems;
  • simulating natural perceptual systems.

Emerging topics such as:

  • animal perception, privacy and security;
  • novel sensors;
  • studies that combine perception and computing research toward applications to healthcare;
  • deep space exploration;
  • cultural and ecological preservation.

CALL FOR POSTERS

We anticipate that we will have a call for posters to be presented in a dedicated session. But as we are aiming at a hybrid conference, we will decide on the presentation format closer to the conference date and depending on numbers.

Poster abstracts will be included in files given to attendees. Posters will be shown in a special cocktail + virtual poster session.
