TOPICAL COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
Current developments in AI-based technologies (especially in machine learning) open up new ways of data and information exchange in Human-Machine Interactions (HMI). As a consequence, the character of HMIs is influenced considerably. This poses challenges on the individual as well as societal level. For instance, some applications of HMI (like self-tracking devices or neurotechnologies) can effectuate new forms of self-knowledge, influence the way people interact with their environment or affect their being-in-the-world. Furthermore, epistemic authority or dependencies on information might change in the context of new HMI technologies. HMI related information might result in changes of attitudes, aims, actions, or self-concepts of persons. Moreover, reflections on information and interaction in HMI must take into account possible effects of algorithms used in information exchange, for instance, on human decision-making and self-determination and, hence, on our concepts of agency, autonomy, privacy or responsibility.
The Topical Collection is dedicated to these challenges with a special focus on questions of describability, meaning and potential consequences of novel processes of information acquisition, processing, storage and exchange in the context of new HMIs. It, thus, aims at bringing together existing debates in the various disciplines (e.g., philosophy, ethics, sociology, cultural studies, psychology, information and techno-sciences) focusing on the relation of information and interaction in new HMI.
TOPICS
Appropriate topics for submission include, among others:
- Questions regarding the concept of information: how can information be conceptualized in the context of novel HMIs? How can (qualitative) changes of the data obtained in HMIs, as well as their interpretation, collection and mediation, be described and understood theoretically?
- Epistemological questions: how do new forms of information shape our knowledge? What new epistemic problems arise? What well-known problems, such as Gettiered knowledge, are aggravated?
- Ethical questions: What role does information play, for example, in the implementation of morality in social robots? What opportunities and risks could arise in the exchange of information between humans and AI? What does information collected in the context of new types of HMI mean for questions of equal access, discrimination, or epistemic justice? What new forms of prejudice in terms of epistemic injustice arise?
SUBMISSION DETAILS
To submit a paper for this special issue, authors should visit the journal’s Editorial Manager: http://www.editorialmanager.com/phte/
The author (or a corresponding author for each submission in case of co- authored papers) must register into EM.
The author must then select the special article type: “Information in Interactions between Humans and Machines” from the selection provided in the submission process. This is needed in order to assign the submissions to the Guest Editors. Submissions will then be assessed according to the following procedure:
New Submission –> Journal Editorial Office –> Guest Editor(s) –> (double-blind) Reviewers –> Reviewers’ Recommendations –> Guest Editor(s)’ Recommendation –> Editor-in-Chief’s Decision –> Author Notification of the Decision.
The process will be reiterated in case of requests for revisions.
Because Topical Collections are published electronically and not physically in a single issue, articles are published in the first available issue of Philosophy & Technology. This means authors do not have to wait until the final article of a Topical Collection is published to get their work fully published in the journal: articles are published continuously until the deadline.
