JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State’s Center for Immersive Experiences (CIE; immersive.psu.edu) is seeking to fill the position of associate director. CIE is a Penn State signature initiative with university-wide participation of 12 colleges and research units and is an affiliated center of the Institute for Computational and Data Science (ICDS).

The Associate Director will be appointed as an Assistant/Associate Research Professor based upon experience and is expected to have their faculty home in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications. They will work directly with the Center Director and coordinate research activities of vibrant, multidisciplinary teams funded or facilitated by CIE. CIE is committed to a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the paradigm-shifting nature of immersive technologies.

Example projects include:

  • advancing the science of immersive technologies and experiences through rigorous empirical evaluations
  • development of new technologies for interpreting research in other areas of expertise
  • designing immersive technologies for education, communication, and decision-making, as well as explorations of synergies of emerging technologies such as XR and AI.

The Associate Director will have excellent organizational skills, a broad understanding of immersive technologies, and a scientific approach to immersive experiences. The ideal candidate must be adaptable and capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment, where new approaches and technologies may change quickly. In addition, a proven track record of academic publications related to immersive technologies and experiences with grant proposal writing is a major advantage for this position.

The Associate Director can have a range of qualifications and can come from several different backgrounds, such as communications/communication science, computer science, engineering, GIScience, landscape architecture/architecture, education, or psychology. A successful candidate will have an interest in applying immersive technologies and experiences across a range of disciplines, and will be open to new, emerging opportunities.

This position will be filled as a one-year faculty appointment with an excellent possibility of renewal. The position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic appointment. Eligibility for benefits is contingent on the applicant’s citizenship or work authorization. Applicants will be considered for an Assistant or Associate Research Professor Faculty rank commensurate with their education and experience. Successful applicants should have a terminal degree in a related discipline.
