We have a two year research position available to support research concerned human factors in Explainable AI. The post is part of an innovative EPSRC/UKRI funded project THuMP: Trust in Human-Machine Partnerships. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting research around the interfaces to support explainability in the context of decision making in human-machine partnerships. Tasks will involve: building an interaction infrastructure for the project; developing a prototype interface for communicating with users; designing new visual layouts for prototype systems and designing and conducting experiments with human subjects based on the use cases co-created with the project partners.

He/she will work closely with members of the THuMP project.

We are seeking enthusiastic applicants with a background in any of the following (but not limited to): HCI, Human Factors, Interface Design/Development, Visualization etc.

THuMP is a multi-disciplinary project, with the ambitious goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in trustworthy human-AI decision-support systems. ThUMP will address the technical challenges involved in creating explainable AI (XAI) systems, with a focus on Visualization for Explainable Planning and Argumentation, so that people using the system can better understand the rationale behind and trust suggestions made by an AI system. This project is conducted in collaboration with three project partners: Schlumberger and Save the Children, which provide use cases for the project, and a law firm who will cooperate in considering legal implications of enhancing machines with transparency and the ability to explain.

The candidate will be responsible for conducting research around the interfaces required to support explainability in the context of decision making in human-machine partnerships. Tasks will involve designing new visual layouts, building the interaction infrastructure for the project, developing a prototype interface for communicating with users, designing and conducting experiments with human subjects based on the use cases that will be co-created with the project partners.

ROLE PURPOSE:

This is a 2-years research post, joining a team of other research associates and investigators to work on an EPSRC/UKRI funded project THuMP: Trust in Human-Machine Partnerships. THuMP is a multi-disciplinary project, with the ambitious goal of advancing the state-of-the-art in trustworthy human-AI decision-support systems. ThUMP will address the technical challenges involved in creating explainable AI (XAI) systems, with a focus on Visualization for Explainable Planning and Computational Argumentation, so that people using the system can better understand the rationale behind and trust suggestions made by an AI system. THuMP will also investigate legal and ethical challenges involved in applying XAI methodologies to autonomous systems and for solving resource allocation problems in critical domains.

This project is conducted in collaboration with three project partners: Schlumberger and Save the Children, which provide use cases for the project, and a law firm which will cooperate in considering legal implications of enhancing machines with transparency and the ability to explain.

The candidate will be responsible for conducting research around the visual interfaces required to support explainability in the context of decision making in human-machine partnerships. Tasks will involve designing new visual layouts, building the interaction infrastructure for the project, developing a prototype interface for communicating with users, designing and conducting experiments with human subjects based on the use cases that will be co-created with the project partners. The candidate will collaborate with other RAs working on the project, and may be involved in the co-supervision of PhD students and masters students.

ROLE PROFILE:

The key challenges on which the applicant will focus can be briefly defined as the following:

  • Work closely with the project team to ensure that the aims and objectives of the project are achieved in a timely and effective way.
  • Develop new concepts and ideas to extend intellectual understanding in the area of the project.
  • Develop methodologies for novel visual interfaces to support decision making in the context of Human-AI interaction.
  • Contribute to the development of software prototypes to demonstrate project concepts and ideas.
  • Develop a prototype interface for visualising complex data and communicating with users.
  • Design and conduct experiments to evaluate the efficacy of the project concepts and developed system.
  • Design and conduct experiments with human subjects based on the user cases that will be co-created with the project partners.
  • Write papers for publication in journals and for presentation at conferences, seminars and other research meetings.
  • Participate in relevant events within the institution or externally, in order to build contacts to facilitate exchange of information and advance thinking.
  • Support events, conferences and workshops run by the project to develop the project outputs and research agenda.

Contribute to the development of further research proposals.
