MORE INFORMATION

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has embarked on a focused cluster hiring plan to recruit top-tier researchers as a part of President Taylor Eighmy’s ambitious strategic initiatives. UTSA is currently looking for three candidates to fill open rank faculty positions to promote collaborative research, education and outreach and to create interdisciplinary areas of knowledge that will advance the field of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), or more generally XR.

Technological advances, the recent booming consumer market in immersive displays and interfaces, and computing capability and speed have accelerated the impact of immersive technologies in our daily lives. According to recent projections, immersive technologies will be a $220 billion-dollar industry by 2022. This technology will drive creative solutions for societal changes in areas such as healthcare, national defense, education, visualization, and data science. The complexity of these global problems will require a highly prepared XR technology workforce and a deep understanding of the human factors involved.

UTSA’s research portfolio has increasingly become more transdisciplinary, cutting across areas such as cybersecurity, brain health, engineering, biomedicine, public health, educational transformation, sustainability, business and policy. These areas have been further fueled by focused faculty cluster hires in areas including cloud computing, cybersecurity, brain health, artificial intelligence, analytics and data science. A targeted cluster hire among faculty with expertise in XR will build on and leverage our established research portfolio, providing new ways to visualize data, collaborate, communicate, and learn across disciplines. Hires are expected to build their own unique programs of research, as well as to collaborate with other hires in this cluster and with colleagues in their home department, college, and scientific community of San Antonio and Texas at large. The multidisciplinary nature of XR is strongly emphasized in this search, which may result in joint appointments across multiple departments and colleges.
