Call: CHI 2018 Workshop: Mid-Air Haptics for Control Interfaces

CHI 2018 Workshop
Mid-Air Haptics for Control Interfaces
April 21-26, 2018, Montréal, Canada
Workshop Date: 21st or 22nd of April 2018 (TBC)

Abstract deadline: February 2, 2018

Both industry and academia are currently developing and evaluating different interfaces based on touchless gesture-tracking devices. These types of interfaces are ideal for applications where direct contact with a physical controller is not desirable. However, one limitation they face is the lack of feedback informing users that gestures have been recognised and accepted. Mid-air haptic interfaces, such as those using focused ultrasound waves can close the feedback loop and improve user experiences.

Ultrahaptics are therefore heading to CHI 2018, and you can join us too!

We’re inviting interested participants to submit a 2-page abstract, to discuss, connect, and progress as part of our one-day workshop.

Taking place in Montréal, Canada from 21st-26th April 2018, CHI is one of the leading events in the field of human-computer interaction and future technologies.

Workshop Date: 21st or 22nd of April 2018 (TBC).

Paper Submissions:

The goal of this workshop is to bring together a group of experts in the growing mid-air haptics and HCI research community, to foster discussion around the design and implementation of feedback using mid-air haptic interfaces in applications, related to AR/VR, automotive, music, robotics and teleoperation, and identify the future challenges we will face.

On the day, expect four mini-keynote talks on the workshop topics (AR/VR, automotive, music, robotics, and teleoperation), twenty 2-minute presentations, as well as four thematic brainstorming sessions to foster discussion, channel research directions, and promote new inter-disciplinary and inter-sectoral collaboration opportunities.

The workshop is intended for the broad HCI and haptics community from both academia or industry.

Participants must submit a short expression of interest (750 words) abstract by February 2, 2018.

For each accepted application, at least one author will have to register for both the workshop and at least one day of the conference.

Submissions or questions should be sent via email to:

All submissions will go through a light touch review from the organizers to bring together a team of attendees who have the best potential to engender good discussion and positively foster a diverse community. The workshop is restricted to approximately 20 participants.

Workshop position papers will be made available through the workshop website. Copyright remains with the authors.
