Job: PhD Studentship in Technology and Aging, University of Lincoln, UK

PhD Studentship – Technology and Aging, University of Lincoln, UK

The University of Lincoln is inviting expressions of interest for a fully-funded studentship (UK/EU) investigating technology that supports older adults’ physical activity routines.

The project is part of a wider research agenda around empowering technology for older adults by creating technology that emphasizes agency, challenging ongoing discourse and contemporary policy on ageing that overwhelmingly focuses on active ageing, the increase of disability-free years, and deficits of older persons. The PhD project adopts a user-centred research approach taking into consideration the perspectives of Human-Computer Interaction, Critical Gerontology and Sports Science. The student is expected to contribute to the exploration of new approaches to technology development for late life, focusing on respectful design that supports agency among older adults wishing to adopt technology in their physical activity routines.

We are looking for applicants who are passionate about working with people, and who have an interest in Human-Computer Interaction. The successful applicant will have a good undergraduate degree (at least 2:1 in the UK system, or ECTS B); a post-graduate degree with a research focus (e.g., an MSc) and previous experience in publishing research would be an advantage.

The studentship is hosted by the School of Computer Science at the University of Lincoln, UK, in collaboration with the Sport, Individual and Society research unit at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. HCI research at Lincoln focuses on cross-disciplinary research into technology to support well-being and quality of life and is committed to the development of interactive systems that are accessible, respectful, and meaningful to end-users.

The student will be jointly supervised by Dr. Kathrin Gerling, School of Computer Science, University of Lincoln, Prof. Antonella De Angeli, School of Computer Science, University of Lincoln, and Dr. Adam Evans, Department of Nutrition, Exercise, and Sports, University of Copenhagen.

In the first instance, please contact Dr. Kathrin Gerling, kgerling@lincoln.ac.uk for an informal conversation around requirements and the application process.

The University of Lincoln, located in the heart of the city of Lincoln, has established an international reputation based on high student satisfaction, excellent graduate employment and world-class research.
