Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for Assistant Professor (Universitair Docent) in Human-Computer Interaction (minimal 0,8 fte) within the Human-Technology Interaction group of the School of Innovation Sciences (IS), which is part of the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS).

Job description

The Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences (IE&IS) has several BSc and MSc programs in two separate schools. The School of Innovation Sciences focuses on the development and use of new technologies in a broad societal context. Research is multi-disciplinary, based on fundamental scientific insights and methods. Main areas of interest are economics and sociology of technological developments, sustainable innovation policy, human-technology interaction, and the history and philosophy of technology.

The Human-Technology Interaction Group:

The Human-Technology Interaction (HTI) group of the School of Innovation Sciences concentrates expertise in both social sciences and engineering, studying technology and its relations to humans and human well-being, within the broader context of a socially and ecologically sustainable society. The HTI group has a strong track record in education at the TU/e, running the BSc program Psychology and Technology and a (international) Master program in Human-Technology Interaction. Current research topics at the Human-Technology Interaction group include affective computing, persuasive technology, virtual environments, digital gaming, recommender systems, online behavior, interactive lighting, robotics, and embodied interfaces.

Tasks:

  • Teaching courses in Human-Computer Interaction and Human Factors at BSc and MSc levels as responsible teacher (formally, up to 50% of employment time);
  • Doing research in areas relevant to the Human-Technology Interaction group;
  • Applying for externally funded research projects;
  • Supervising BSc, MSc and/or PhD students;
  • Participating in teaching at the PhD level;
  • Contributing to the management of the Human-Technology Interaction Group.

Job requirements

The candidate should be open and interested to work in a multidisciplinary environment, with an international outlook, and with a strong focus on teaching excellence, scientific methodology and empirical research.

The candidate is expected to have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. degree in HCI or a related discipline (e.g., cognitive engineering, interaction design);
  • Holds or is willing to obtain a Basic Qualification Teaching (BKO) from the Dutch Universities’ teaching certification program;
  • Experience and excellence in teaching as shown by course evaluations;
  • Excellence in research as shown by first rate publications in international journals and/or top-tier HCI conferences;
  • Excellent communication, organization and management skills;
  • Mastery of the English language (fluent);
  • Strong cooperation skills and ability to work in a team;
  • Ability to supervise PhD students and postdocs;
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and to build bridges between disciplines, especially within the School of Innovation Sciences;
  • Strong affinity with technology and the engineering sciences.

Conditions of employment

We offer:

  • a challenging job in a dynamic and ambitious group and department;
  • a full-time appointment for an initial period of two years. This could become a tenure track position, subject to a positive evaluation and funding;
  • a gross monthly salary between € 3.259,- and € 4.462,-, based on a full-time appointment and depending on experience and knowledge;
  • a yearly holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary;
  • a yearly end year allowance of 8.3% of the yearly salary;
  • a broad package of fringe benefits (including an excellent technical infrastructure, moving expenses, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities).
